Kubota and Kilter Launch Next-Gen Weeding Robot for Farmers
Japanese agricultural equipment manufacturer Kubota has formed a partnership with Norwegian tech startup Kilter to co-develop and promote the Kilter AX-1, a new autonomous weeding robot. This innovative collaboration focuses on the European market, initially targeting vegetable growers in Germany and the Netherlands. Farmers cultivating crops such as spinach, salad lettuces, herbs, celeriac, and strawberries aim to enhance their yields and improve crop quality while minimizing the use of chemical pesticides.
The Kilter AX-1 employs a patented technology called “Single Drop Technology,” which integrates artificial intelligence for weed recognition with approximately 6 mm placement accuracy. This allows the robot to deliver micro-doses of herbicide directly to the weeds, thereby protecting surrounding crops and reducing soil impact. Achieving this precise droplet application was no small feat. According to Anders Brevik, CEO of Kilter, “You can’t buy a field-ready droplet applicator off the shelf. We had to design one that survives years of dust, vibration, temperature swings, and long operating days, while keeping droplet size, timing, and placement consistent.”
Kilter reports that the adoption of the AX-1 could enable growers to reduce their herbicide usage by up to 95%. This shift represents a move from traditional chemical applications to more intelligent, targeted solutions that align with sustainable farming practices.
Integration with Kubota’s Farming Solutions
In 2024, Kubota Europe launched its Smart Farming Solutions Division, which is now collaborating with Kilter to train sales staff within its European dealer network. This initiative aims to seamlessly integrate the Kilter AX-1 into Kubota’s broader portfolio of agricultural solutions. While details regarding pricing and availability in North America remain undisclosed, the partnership signifies a strong commitment to advancing agricultural technology.
Kubota has been actively showcasing its electrified and autonomous agricultural solutions at events such as CES, making significant strides in the field. The collaboration with Kilter is part of a larger sustainability strategy that extends beyond simply reducing carbon emissions. It aims to move towards a more sustainable future by focusing on reducing chemical usage and promoting biodiversity.
The developments in the agricultural sector highlight an ongoing trend towards innovation and environmental responsibility. As technology continues to evolve, initiatives like the partnership between Kubota and Kilter could play a crucial role in shaping the future of farming.
