Tesla Giga Berlin Displays Solidarity Amid IG Metall Dispute
Tesla’s Giga Berlin plant has taken a public stance of solidarity as it navigates an escalating conflict with the German union IG Metall. On February 23, 2026, plant manager André Thierig shared an image on the social media platform X, showcasing a prominent banner in the facility’s lobby that reads: “Progress. Innovation. Success.” Thierig emphasized that this slogan represents the core values of the plant since it began production in 2022.
The display of solidarity comes at a tumultuous time for Tesla and IG Metall. The dispute arose when Tesla accused a union representative of secretly recording a works council meeting at Giga Berlin. Following this allegation, Tesla filed a criminal complaint, leading to police involvement. Authorities confirmed they had seized a computer belonging to an IG Metall member as part of their investigation into the matter.
In his earlier post on X, Thierig expressed his astonishment at the incident, stating, “What has happened today at Giga Berlin is truly beyond words! An external union representative from IG Metall attended a works council meeting. For unknown reasons, he recorded the internal meeting and was caught in action! We obviously called police and filed a criminal complaint!”
The situation has intensified further with IG Metall denying the accusations, characterizing Tesla’s actions as an election tactic ahead of upcoming works council elections. In retaliation, the union filed a defamation complaint against Thierig, and an investigation is currently underway.
Giga Berlin’s Role in Tesla’s European Operations
Since its opening in 2022, Giga Berlin has become a pivotal manufacturing hub for Tesla in Europe, primarily producing the Model Y, the company’s best-selling vehicle. The facility has increased its capacity over the years, despite facing challenges such as environmental protests, labor disputes, and regulatory scrutiny.
Tesla’s commitment to innovation and progress is evident in its messaging, as highlighted by Thierig’s statement about the banner. He remarked, “Our lobby at Giga Berlin covered in a huge banner these days. Progress. Innovation. Success – this is what we stand for since we started production in 2022 and how we will go into our future!”
As both sides navigate this dispute, the outcome will likely have implications not only for Giga Berlin but also for Tesla’s operations across Europe. The ongoing tension between the company and IG Metall raises questions about labor relations and the future of union representation in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.
The developments at Giga Berlin underscore the complexities of labor relations in a globalized economy, where the drive for technological advancement often intersects with the rights and representation of workers. As the investigation unfolds, all eyes will be on Tesla and IG Metall to see how this conflict resolves.
