On February 27 and 28, 2024, the Kiowa County Extension Services organized a series of quilting workshops aimed at both youth and adults. Under the expert guidance of Carole Spady and Mary Rhodes, participants engaged in hands-on activities that fostered creativity and skill development in quilting.

The success of these workshops can be attributed to the generous contributions from Dorothy Ellicott, a dedicated supporter of 4-H and homemaking initiatives. Her donation of materials played a crucial role in enabling participants to craft various projects, enhancing their learning experience.

Inspiring Young Quilters

The first day of workshops was particularly exciting as four young girls explored the joys of sewing. With the assistance of Spady and Rhodes, they crafted a range of fun and practical items, including a Christmas tree ornament, a travel tissue pack cover, a pillowcase cover, and a sunglasses case. The interactive nature of the workshop not only built their sewing skills but also instilled a sense of accomplishment and joy.

Expanding Skills for Adult Participants

The following day welcomed eleven enthusiastic adults eager to enhance their quilting capabilities. Participants traveled from various locations, including Lamar, Cheyenne Wells, Rocky Ford, and Las Animas to join the workshop. During the introductions, attendees shared personal stories about their inspirations for crafting and sewing, creating a warm and supportive atmosphere.

Throughout the session, Spady and Rhodes provided invaluable guidance, offering tips and techniques while leading participants through the creation of a table topper. Attendees left the workshop feeling motivated and eager to apply their new skills in future projects.

A special acknowledgment is due to both Spady and Rhodes for their dedication, which included the preparation of materials and providing sewing machines for the workshops. Additionally, thanks to Krystal Eikenberg and Eve Clark for their assistance with the setup and cleanup, ensuring a smooth experience for everyone involved.

The Kiowa County Extension Services is committed to promoting skills in quilting and other homemaking crafts, and the recent workshops exemplified this mission. With the support of community members like Ellicott, the initiative continues to inspire creativity and skill development among residents.
