Rolls-Royce Unveils World’s First High-Speed Methanol Engine
British luxury car manufacturer Rolls-Royce has achieved a notable milestone by successfully testing the world’s first high-speed marine engine that operates solely on methanol. This groundbreaking development aims to revolutionize ship propulsion while significantly reducing carbon emissions in the maritime sector. The tests were conducted at the Rolls-Royce Power Systems facility in Friedrichshafen, Germany, as part of the meOHmare research initiative.
The meOHmare project is a collaborative effort involving Woodward L’Orange GmbH, a fuel injection specialist, and WTZ Roßlau, a research institute focused on engine technology and alternative propulsion solutions. The initiative has received funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and aims to develop a comprehensive, CO2-neutral high-speed engine concept by the end of 2025.
“This is a genuine world first,” stated Jörg Stratmann, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG. “To date, there is no other high-speed engine in this performance class that runs purely on methanol.” This innovative engine is designed to reshape maritime propulsion, moving away from traditional diesel engines.
Methanol, a colorless liquid alcohol, has distinct properties that differentiate it from conventional fuels. It does not ignite on its own, necessitating a completely new injection system. Consequently, Rolls-Royce engineers undertook a comprehensive redesign of the combustion process, turbocharging system, and engine controls to accommodate this alternative fuel. They also modified the test bench infrastructure to meet the specific demands of methanol fuel.
“Initial tests show that the engine is running smoothly – now it’s time for fine-tuning,” explained Johannes Kech, head of methanol engine development within the power systems division at Rolls-Royce.
The potential of methanol as a fuel for decarbonizing maritime transport is becoming increasingly recognized. When produced using renewable energy through power-to-X technology, methanol offers nearly CO2-neutral operation. It is biodegradable, easy to store, and generates significantly fewer pollutants compared to fossil fuels. These characteristics make it an ideal choice for ferries, yachts, and offshore vessels striving to comply with increasingly stringent environmental regulations.
“We are investing specifically in future technologies to open up efficient ways for our customers to reduce CO2 emissions and further expand our leading role in sustainable propulsion systems,” Stratmann added.
The successful testing of this engine is seen as a pivotal moment for sustainable shipping. Denise Kurtulus, senior vice president of global marine at Rolls-Royce, emphasized that this development confirms green methanol as a viable fuel for the future. “The single-fuel methanol engine is an attractive solution, especially for operators of ferries, yachts, or supply vessels who want to reduce their carbon footprint,” she stated. “The task now is to create the framework conditions for wider use.”
Rolls-Royce also revealed plans to develop a dual-fuel concept that would enable the use of both methanol and diesel, providing a transitional solution while supply chains for green methanol are established.
“For us, methanol is the fuel of the future in shipping – clean, efficient, and climate-friendly,” Kurtulus concluded. “It burns with significantly lower emissions than fossil fuels and has a high energy density compared to other sustainable energy sources.” This innovative approach places Rolls-Royce at the forefront of the movement towards greener maritime solutions, with a commitment to reducing the industry’s environmental impact.
