A fire described as deliberately set has severely damaged the historic Beth Israel Synagogue in Jackson, Mississippi. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, March 9, 2024, when authorities report that Stephen Spencer Pittman, a 19-year-old man, ignited a blaze in the building’s library. The synagogue, which has served the local Jewish community for over 160 years, is now closed indefinitely, with its interiors heavily damaged by smoke and fire.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Pittman confessed to the act, motivated by the building’s Jewish significance. This marks the second attack on the synagogue, which was previously bombed in 1967 by members of the Klu Klux Klan. The synagogue also houses the Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life, supporting Jewish communities across 13 states.

Pittman was apprehended at a local hospital after his father reported his confession to the FBI. He sustained non-life-threatening burn injuries during the incident. During his initial court appearance on March 11, Pittman appeared via video link, visibly bandaged and under the representation of a public defender.

Details of the Arson Incident

CCTV footage captured a hooded individual, identified as Pittman, pouring gasoline inside the synagogue. The criminal complaint details that he first purchased the gasoline at a nearby gas station, where he removed his vehicle’s license plate. After breaking a window with an axe, he ignited the fire using a torch lighter.

The Jackson Fire Department responded shortly after 03:00 and classified the fire as “incendiary” based on fire patterns and video evidence. The library suffered extensive damage, and the sanctuary also incurred significant smoke damage, rendering the building inoperable for an indefinite period.

The fire resulted in extensive damage to a significant portion of the building,” the complaint states. The synagogue’s president, Zach Shemper, indicated that it could take upwards of a year to restore the facility. In the meantime, local churches have offered their spaces for the congregation.

Investigation and Community Response

Evidence against Pittman includes his confessions, corroborated by location data from a family tracking application. The data traced his route from his home in Madison County to the gas station and then to the synagogue. Text messages to his father further revealed his intentions, including a photo of the synagogue and comments about its security systems.

Pittman described the synagogue as the “synagogue of Satan” during interviews with investigators, suggesting a motive rooted in antisemitism. Shemper noted that law enforcement had informed him about the suspect’s online antisemitic posts, although he had not personally seen them. Pam Bondi, the Attorney General, condemned the act as a “disgusting act of anti-Semitic violence.”

The damage to the synagogue extends beyond structural loss, with several Torah scrolls reported destroyed. The American Jewish Committee condemned the incident as a “hateful act,” highlighting the emotional toll on the community.

Michele Schipper, a former president of the congregation, expressed devastation over the attack but emphasized a commitment to maintaining the Jewish community’s presence in Jackson. “We are ready to rebuild,” she stated, reflecting the community’s resilience in the face of adversity.

As the investigation continues, Pittman faces serious charges, including “arson of property used in interstate commerce.” If convicted, he could face a prison sentence ranging from five to 20 years. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 20, 2024, where he will face the legal consequences of his actions against a cherished community institution.
