Holiday Spirit Shines at Baptist Anderson Medical Center’s Tree Display

The festive spirit is alive and well at the Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian, Mississippi, where an innovative tree display has captivated visitors this holiday season. The hospital’s lobby now features 26 uniquely decorated three-foot Christmas trees, each inspired by a popular holiday song. This initiative not only adds a splash of color to the hospital but also aims to uplift the spirits of patients and their families during a challenging time.

A Creative Competition Among Departments

The tree display emerged from a friendly competition among various hospital departments, with each tasked to decorate their tree according to the theme of a specific holiday tune. Songs such as “Let it Snow” and “Little Drummer Boy” guided the creative efforts. Organized by Dr. Troy Dukes, the director of pastoral care at the hospital, this initiative was inspired by a similar event at a Baptist hospital in Jackson.

Dr. Dukes emphasized the importance of bringing joy to a setting often marked by struggle and trauma. “This is a place of great struggle and trauma for people,” he stated. “Any bit of light and healing we can bring in, we try to do it.” The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with visitors returning to admire the creativity on display.

Diverse Themes and Unique Decorations

Among the standout trees, one dedicated to the song “Feliz Navidad” bursts with vibrant decorations resembling a festive fiesta, while the “Blue Christmas” tree features images of a smiling young Elvis Presley. A tree inspired by “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” showcases photos of Harold Brassfield, a staff member known for his singing talents, adding a personal touch to the decoration theme.

Another innovative display comes from the hospital’s transportation department. Their “12 Days of Christmas” tree features humorous, modified lyrics like “Four Code Calls, Three Security Monitors” alongside playful depictions of hospital security guards in dance poses. This creative twist highlights the light-hearted spirit of the season and engages both staff and visitors.

The trees, which have transformed the first-floor lobby near the parking garage, are expected to remain on display until the first week of January. This festive installation serves as a beacon of hope and joy, proving that even in a healthcare setting, the holiday spirit can flourish.

In comparison, a visit to the nearby Ochsner Rush Medical Center revealed a smaller tree display; however, the warm atmosphere was palpable, with a receptionist singing festive tunes.
