Community Events Highlight Activities in Hanover and Wilkes-Barre

A series of community events is set to engage residents in the Hanover and Wilkes-Barre areas throughout late January and early February 2026. These gatherings aim to foster community spirit, support local organizations, and provide opportunities for social interaction.

Upcoming Meetings and Book Clubs

On Wednesday, January 21, the Plains Sons of the American Legion will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Post 558 in Plains Township. Squad Commander Jim Emil will lead the discussion, focusing on future fundraising initiatives and events for veterans. All members of the Sons of the American Legion are encouraged to attend.

For teenagers, the Osterhout Free Library is launching a new book club called Bookish Banter, which will meet from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the same day. This club offers a space for teens to discuss their favorite reads, share recommendations, and connect with fellow book lovers.

Community Dinners and Celebrations

On Saturday, January 31, the Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church will host a piggie and holubtsi dinner from noon to 4 p.m. at their school hall located at 635 N. River St., Wilkes-Barre. The menu features meat- and rice-stuffed cabbage, mashed potatoes, vegetables, bread, butter, and dessert for a cost of $15 for adults and $9 for children aged 12 and under. While walk-ins are welcome, reservations are encouraged; interested individuals can call 570-829-3051 to RSVP.

Additionally, the St. Maria Goretti Church will offer a pasta dinner on Sunday, February 1, from noon to 3 p.m. The meal includes pasta, sausage, salad, dessert, and beverage for a donation of $15. To celebrate the upcoming Super Bowl, Holy Trinity Orthodox Church will hold a piggy sale from February 2 to February 5. Orders can be placed between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., with pickup on February 7 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.. Prices are set at $8 for two or $15 for four, and preorders are necessary due to limited availability. Cultural Events and Programs

On Monday, February 9, King’s College will host a program titled “The Organ and Catholic Liturgy” at 7 p.m.. This event will take place in the George and Giovita Maffei Family Commons, located at 29 W. North St., Wilkes-Barre, and is free and open to the public. The St. Nicholas/St. Mary Church is gearing up for its 59th German Nite Celebration on Saturday, February 14. Festivities will begin at 5 p.m. with a German-style meal served from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.. The menu features traditional dishes including pork, sauerkraut, chicken francaise, and bratwurst. Dancing will follow from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with live music from the band Schnitzel. Tickets are available for $40 at the parish office, and reservations for groups of eight or more are encouraged.

Lastly, the Wilkes-Barre Township will be selling a commemorative book for its 250th anniversary. Residents can place orders at the Wilkes-Barre Township Municipal Building for $25, with payments accepted via check or money order made out to Wilkes-Barre Township.
