Selma Launches New Podiatry Center to Enhance Specialty Care Access
Access to specialty healthcare has improved significantly in Selma, Alabama, with the recent opening of the new Selma Podiatry Center, operated by the Rural Health Medical Program. This facility aims to address a critical gap in healthcare services for residents in the region, particularly those suffering from chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.
The Rural Health Medical Program, which has been serving West Alabama for nearly 47 years, now operates 11 health centers across six counties, including Dallas, Perry, Wilcox, Marengo, Clarke, and Monroe. In addition to its physical locations, the organization utilizes a mobile health unit to reach patients in rural and underserved areas.
Kesha Dozier Smith, the chief executive officer of the Rural Health Medical Program, has emphasized the organization’s mission to act as a safety net for uninsured or underinsured patients. The program collaborates with hospitals, health departments, urgent care facilities, and private practices to ensure comprehensive care. Smith pointed out that specialty services, like podiatry, are particularly vital in rural communities where barriers, such as transportation issues and limited clinic availability, can hinder access to necessary healthcare.
Treating foot problems is especially crucial for patients with chronic illnesses. Untreated issues can escalate into severe complications, including infections, hospitalizations, and even amputations. The new podiatry center provides a dedicated space for patients requiring foot care, especially older adults and those managing long-term health conditions.
With the Selma Podiatry Center, patients can now receive specialized podiatry services closer to home, reducing the need for long-distance travel to see specialists. Smith explained that the organization’s approach to care is designed to be comprehensive, allowing patients to access various services, including primary care, dental services, behavioral health support via telehealth, chronic care management, and specialty services like podiatry, all within a single system.
Smith’s personal experiences growing up in rural Alabama have shaped her commitment to improving healthcare access. She recalls the challenges faced by families, particularly those without insurance, often requiring them to travel long distances for specialty care. Many patients still confront the difficult decision between attending medical appointments and fulfilling basic needs such as food and housing. To combat these challenges, the Rural Health Medical Program connects patients to additional resources, including transportation assistance and care coordination.
The Selma Podiatry Center is now open and accepting patients. Individuals interested in scheduling an appointment can call 844-736-7629. For further information regarding services, locations, and employment opportunities, interested parties can visit the Rural Health Medical Program website. This initiative marks a significant step forward in improving healthcare accessibility in the region, ensuring that residents have the necessary support for their health needs.
