Community Leader Louise K. Breitung Passes Away at 87
Louise K. Breitung, a dedicated community leader and former employee of the Ulster County Cooperative Extension, passed away on January 23, 2026, in Dallas, Texas. She was 87 years old. Breitung, originally from Chester, New York, spent more than 35 years contributing to her community through her work in Kingston, New York.
Born on August 16, 1938, Breitung graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy, New York. Throughout her career at the Ulster County Cooperative Extension, she was known for her unwavering commitment to community service and her strong relationships with colleagues. Her dedication to her work left a lasting impact on those she served.
After her retirement, Breitung relocated to Dallas to be closer to her family and to enjoy time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters, Alison Breitung of Dallas, Texas, and Helen Combs of Birmingham, Alabama. Alison is the mother of David, while Helen is the mother of Addison. Breitung is also survived by her brother, Leon Kakargo, of Chester, New York. She was preceded in death by her sister, Frances Conneman.

Breitung’s dedication to her work in the community was evident throughout her career. Colleagues and friends remember her as a passionate advocate for the programs and services offered through the Ulster County Cooperative Extension. She believed in the importance of education and support for local families, helping to improve the lives of many residents in the region.
Services for Louise K. Breitung will be held privately with family in Dallas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Cornell Cooperative Extension Ulster County, located at 232 Plaza Road, Kingston, NY 12401. This organization continues to offer essential resources and programs that Breitung championed during her career.
Breitung will be remembered not only for her professional contributions but also for her devotion to family and community. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege to know her and benefit from her work.
