Maine Communities React as ICE Targets Local Immigrant Population

Communities across Maine are grappling with the impact of an intensified enforcement operation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has resulted in multiple arrests of local immigrants. The operation, named “Catch of the Day,” aims to target individuals classified as “the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens,” according to the Department of Homeland Security.

On the first day of the operation, Cassandra Linton, who runs a company providing support for adults with disabilities, reported that one of her employees was detained while he was on a lunch break. The employee, originally from Burundi, has a pending asylum claim and is currently being held at an ICE facility in Massachusetts. Linton expressed concern for her clients, particularly those who are nonverbal, fearing what might happen if their caregivers are arrested while out in public.

In Portland’s Parkside neighborhood, residents responded to the ICE presence by honking car horns and using whistles to alert others. A local resident named Olivia shared her frustration, stating, “I just feel like it’s insane that this is allowed to be happening.” The atmosphere in the community has been charged with anxiety as families worry about the implications of the operation.

ICE spokespersons have not disclosed the total number of arrests made during the operation, but reports indicate that nearly 50 individuals may have been detained. Local officials in cities such as Portland, Lewiston, and Westbrook have uniformly condemned the surge in enforcement. Mattie Daughtry, the state Senate President, described the operation’s terminology as “dehumanizing and dangerous,” emphasizing that the language used makes it seem as though people are being hunted.

Portland City Councilor Wes Pelletier characterized the situation as a “war of terror” being waged by the federal government against a safe community. He stated, “No one asked the federal government to come here. This is one of the safest cities in the country.” The councilors held a press conference to voice their collective opposition to the increased ICE activity, underscoring that local authorities did not request such federal enforcement.

As immigrant advocacy groups have advised families to stay home, schools in Portland reported a decrease in attendance. In response, some community members are forming networks to provide food and other essential supplies to those opting to shelter in place. The anxiety surrounding the enforcement operation has led to increased support efforts from local residents.

ICE Deputy Assistant Director Patricia Hyde confirmed earlier this week that the agency has a target list of 1,400 individuals in Maine, representing approximately 10% of the immigrant population without permanent legal status in the state, according to data from the Migration Policy Institute. The extent and duration of this crackdown remain uncertain, but its effects are already felt deeply within the community as fear permeates the daily lives of many.
