Scientists Reveal 3D Imaging of Mexico’s Popocatepetl Volcano
Researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have successfully created the first three-dimensional image of the interior of the Popocatepetl volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. This groundbreaking development offers vital insights into the accumulation of magma and the dynamics of volcanic activity, which is crucial for disaster preparedness given the volcano’s potential impact on millions of residents nearby.
The Popocatepetl volcano, affectionately known as “El Popo,” poses a significant threat to approximately 25 million people living within a 62-mile radius. The densely populated area includes schools, hospitals, and five airports, making the need for accurate monitoring and understanding of the volcano’s behavior essential. Marco Calo, a geophysicist leading the research team, emphasizes the importance of this work in helping authorities prepare for potential eruptions.
Enhancing Understanding of Volcanic Activity
Popocatepetl has been under intense scientific scrutiny, especially due to its continuous activity since 1994, which includes regular emissions of smoke, gas, and ash. The team’s research aims to uncover the hidden complexities beneath the surface of the volcano. Prior studies had provided initial images, but these lacked the resolution needed to map the volcanic structure accurately and locate magma chambers.
To address these limitations, Calo’s team expanded the number of seismographs from 12 to 22, increasing data collection capabilities. These instruments measure ground vibrations up to 100 times per second, enabling the team to gather extensive seismic data analyzed by doctoral student Karina Bernal using artificial intelligence algorithms. This advanced analysis allowed them to identify various seismic signals and infer the materials, states, temperatures, and depths within the volcano.
The resulting 3D image, which extends 11 miles below the crater, reveals multiple magma pools at varying depths, offering a significantly more intricate representation of the volcano than traditional maps. Calo notes that understanding these dynamics is critical for predicting volcanic behavior and hazards, ultimately improving safety for the surrounding communities.
A Journey into the Heart of the Volcano
Calo and his team conduct fieldwork at high altitudes, camping at around 12,500 feet to safely study the volcano’s activity. From their vantage point, they can observe the stunning landscapes of Pico de Orizaba, La Malinche, and Iztaccíhuatl. During their expeditions, they experience the sounds of the volcano, such as small tremors and the soft patter of ash falling, which can resemble rainfall during heightened activity.
The research not only focuses on the current state of Popocatepetl but also examines its historical context, including its impact on local communities and previous eruptions. Calo highlights the volcano’s rich history, noting how human activities, such as sulfur extraction, have influenced its behavior over the centuries.
The team’s meticulous efforts in mapping the interior of Popocatepetl provide essential data for understanding and forecasting volcanic hazards. This research will enhance the ability of local authorities to prepare for potential eruptions, ultimately safeguarding the lives and properties of those living in proximity to the volcano.
By revealing the complex inner workings of Popocatepetl, scientists are taking significant steps toward mitigating the risks associated with volcanic eruptions, demonstrating a commitment to both scientific discovery and public safety.
