Recursion CEO Chris Gibson Steps Down After 12 Years of Leadership
Chris Gibson, the CEO of Utah-based techbio company Recursion, is stepping down after 12 years at the helm. Effective January 1, 2024, Najat Khan, the current head of research and development and Chief Commercial Officer, will take over the leadership role. This transition marks a significant change for Recursion, a company co-founded by Gibson in 2013 that aimed to revolutionize drug discovery through technology and data.
Under Gibson’s leadership, Recursion made bold claims, including a promise in 2014 to develop 100 drugs within a decade. As of now, that ambition remains unfulfilled, as the company has yet to bring any drugs to market. Earlier this year, Recursion faced challenges that resulted in the reduction of nearly half its drug pipeline, raising questions about its long-term strategy and viability in a competitive landscape.
Gibson was the last of the three co-founders still active in the company on a full-time basis. Many employees regarded him as a key driver of Recursion’s success, attributing to him an “extraordinary ability to keep pulling rabbits out of hats,” as one staff member noted in a previous interview. His skill in attracting investors and securing new partnership deals was particularly vital after the company’s initial three pharmaceutical collaborations came to an end.
The shift in leadership comes at a time when Recursion, like many firms in the biotech space, is navigating the complexities of integrating artificial intelligence into drug development. As the sector continues to evolve, Khan’s appointment may signal a new direction for the company. Her experience in both R&D and commercial strategy positions her to address the challenges that lie ahead.
Gibson’s departure underscores a crucial moment for Recursion, as it seeks to realign its strategy and regain momentum in a rapidly changing industry. The transition will be closely watched by investors and industry analysts who are keen to see how Khan will steer the company into its next chapter.
