Mountain Brook Students Shine at Alabama DECA State Competition
Mountain Brook High School achieved notable success at the recent Alabama DECA State Competition, with 27 students representing the school among nearly 1,300 competitors from across the state. The event, which took place on March 1, 2024, showcased the students’ business acumen and presentation skills in a competitive setting.
Prior to the competition, participants completed a 100-question exam in their chosen categories, which contributed to one-third of their overall scores. During the event, students were presented with real-world business scenarios and were given just 30 minutes to devise and present their solutions to a panel of judges. This roleplay component accounted for the remaining two-thirds of their scores, testing both critical thinking and communication abilities.
Mountain Brook High School finished with an impressive total of 13 finalists, including five entries that secured top-four placements in their respective categories. Among the top achievers were Charlotte Morrow and Marcella Morgan, who earned second place in the Hospitality Services category, demonstrating their expertise in customer service and management strategies. Sam Long also stood out, capturing third place in Automotive Services, reflecting his understanding of industry standards and practices.
Additionally, Reese Zaucha and William Tabb finished fourth in Business Law and Ethics, showcasing their grasp of legal principles and ethical considerations in business. Other finalists included Nicholson Lowery and Michael Huddleston in Sports and Entertainment Marketing, and Joseph Johnston and Davis Condra in the same category. Hollis Thomasson and Caroline Courtenay excelled in Travel and Tourism, while Elizabeth Powell and Eva Worthen also represented the school in that sector.
School officials expressed their pride in the students’ accomplishments at the statewide competition, highlighting the dedication and hard work that led to these impressive results. This event not only provided a platform for students to apply their knowledge but also prepared them for future careers in various business fields. The success of Mountain Brook High School at the DECA competition emphasizes the importance of such programs in fostering young talent and encouraging academic excellence in real-world applications.
