Navy Doctor Dismissed After Social Media Controversy Over Transgender Care
A Navy doctor has been dismissed from her command following scrutiny from right-wing activists regarding her role in transgender healthcare. Commander Janelle Marra, a physician with over 21 years of military service, had her LinkedIn profile shared widely on social media, leading to calls for action from prominent figures.
The online account Libs of TikTok, known for promoting anti-LGBTQ+ narratives, tagged Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a tweet featuring a screenshot of Marra’s profile, which indicated her pronouns as she/her and described her position as the “Navy deputy medical director for transgender healthcare.” The tweet included a critical remark urging Hegseth to “look into this.” In response, Hegseth tweeted, “Pronouns UPDATED: She/Her/Fired,” confirming that he ordered Marra’s removal.
According to a Navy insider who spoke to local newspaper KPBS, the official reason for Marra’s dismissal was cited as a “loss of trust and confidence in her ability to command.” The source requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the situation. Currently, Marra’s social media activities are under investigation, although detailed information about the inquiry remains undisclosed.
Marra has spent the majority of her career serving in the San Diego region, including positions at the San Diego Naval Medical Center and Camp Pendleton. Her contributions to the military community, particularly in the area of transgender healthcare, have been recognized by peers. Space Force Col. Bree Fram, who has worked closely with Marra, expressed her dismay at the dismissal, emphasizing Marra’s qualifications and her dedication to caring for service members.
Fram, who is retiring due to the previous administration’s ban on transgender individuals in the military, stated, “I have known Marra as an exceptionally qualified doctor who was responsible for taking care of a huge number of sailors and Marines.” She also recounted her experiences of receiving threats following her advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, illustrating the hostile environment faced by many in the community.
Marra’s profile on the LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory indicates that she identifies as bisexual and specializes in providing healthcare to transgender and nonbinary individuals. Nevertheless, a spokesperson from the Defense Health Agency informed KPBS that the position of Navy deputy medical director for transgender healthcare does not officially exist. The spokesperson elaborated that while the Pentagon contemplated establishing a Transgender Health Center under the Biden Administration, it was never implemented. “It was considered last year, and the services were asked to nominate personnel, but it was never established,” the spokesperson confirmed.
The dismissal of Commander Marra has raised concerns regarding the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals within the military and the implications of political pressures on medical personnel. As investigations continue, the situation highlights ongoing debates over healthcare access and military policy regarding transgender service members.
