French Navy Receives Advanced Sea Drone with 99% Mine Detection Rate
The French Navy has received a cutting-edge unmanned surface vessel capable of detecting sea mines with an impressive accuracy rate of 99%. Developed by Thales, this advanced sea drone is designed to enhance operational performance while minimizing personnel exposure to hazardous environments.
Enhanced Mine Countermeasure Operations
Equipped with a state-of-the-art TSAM towed sonar and the innovative SAMDIS multi-view sonar, the new drone represents a significant advancement in mine countermeasure operations. Sébastien Guérémy, Vice-President responsible for Underwater Systems at Thales, emphasized that this technology supports the French Navy’s transition to a new operational concept for countering maritime threats. He stated, “The autonomous system developed by Thales significantly improves mission efficiency while limiting the exposure of crews to mine-related risks.”
The drone is integrated with high-performance sensors, including a unique “multi-view” SAMDIS antenna, which enhances its operational capabilities. Additionally, it is designed to be resilient against cyber threats, allowing it to conduct sensitive operations effectively.
Innovative Features and Extensive Testing
Thales asserts that this unmanned vessel incorporates advanced mission planning and sonar data analysis software, streamlining the workload for operators. More than 3,000 hours of sea trials were conducted to ensure that the system meets the operational needs of naval forces.
This delivery follows the completion of the first production system in December 2024, which included the surface drone equipped with the TSAM sonar and enhanced data analysis software utilizing artificial intelligence. The integration of the M-Cube mission management system further enhances the drone’s capabilities.
The new drone is part of the Franco-British Maritime Mine Counter Measures (MMCM) programme, which aims to bolster naval forces’ operational superiority. Guérémy remarked on the program’s significance, stating, “The MMCM program increases the operational superiority of naval forces, with its M-Cube software at core, designed for fast integration of heterogeneous drones and innovative AI algorithms, reducing operators’ cognitive load.”
This development underscores Thales’s commitment to advancing maritime defense and its role as a systems integrator, particularly in collaboration with the Couach shipyard. The prototypes of the surface drones have been tested by both the French Navy and the Royal Navy since 2021, reflecting the program’s collaborative nature.
The project is managed by the Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement (OCCAR) and receives support from the French and UK Ministries of Defence. As the demand for advanced maritime capabilities grows, this new sea drone marks a significant step forward in the ongoing evolution of naval warfare technology.
