Las Vegas Unveils $44 Million Medical Lab to Enhance Health Services
Las Vegas is set to expand its medical infrastructure with the announcement of a new $44 million medical laboratory. The facility, developed by the Nevada Health & Bioscience Corporation (NHBC), will be located adjacent to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) medical school on Shadow Lane. This initiative aims to enhance health testing capabilities, blood services, and molecular diagnostics for diseases, including tuberculosis.
The two-story, 34,000-square-foot laboratory will address a critical gap in local healthcare. Currently, many of Nevada’s blood services are processed out of state. According to Dr. Barbara Atkinson, a medical consultant for NHBC, the new lab will significantly improve the efficiency of these services. She emphasized that the inclusion of a molecular testing lab specifically for tuberculosis is one of the facility’s standout features.
The project has garnered substantial financial backing, receiving a $35 million grant from the State of Nevada through ARPA funds, along with an additional $9 million grant from the City of Las Vegas general funds. Dr. Atkinson noted that the new laboratory will not only enhance healthcare services but will also expand educational opportunities for students in laboratory medicine, hematology, blood banking, and molecular medicine. This expansion is expected to play a vital role in training the next generation of medical professionals in Nevada.
Construction Timeline and Project Partners
Construction of the medical laboratory is scheduled to commence in November 2023, with an anticipated completion date in late 2026. The project will be executed by a collaboration of several firms, including Sletten Construction, Whiting Turner Contracting Company, and Carpenter Sellers Del Gatto Architects. This partnership aims to ensure that the facility meets the highest standards of modern medical practice while supporting educational initiatives.
As Las Vegas continues to grow as a hub for healthcare and education, this new laboratory embodies a commitment to improving health services for residents and fostering a skilled workforce ready to meet future medical challenges. The strategic location next to UNLV will facilitate collaboration between education and practical health services, enhancing both local healthcare delivery and academic training.
