Donut Lab Unveils World’s First Solid State EV Battery at CES 2026
Researchers continue to innovate in battery technology, with a notable breakthrough announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026 in Las Vegas. Donut Lab has revealed the world’s first solid state electric vehicle (EV) battery, which boasts an energy density of **400 watt-hours per kilogram (wh/kg)**. This figure represents nearly **double the charge** capacity compared to certain models of Tesla EVs, positioning this new battery as a significant advancement in the industry.
The solid state battery developed by Donut Lab promises several advantages over traditional lithium-ion batteries. It is designed to offer **greater durability**, **faster charging**, improved energy storage efficiency, enhanced safety features, and lower production costs. According to the company, this innovative battery can reach a full charge in just **five minutes** and is expected to last for up to **100,000 charging cycles**. In comparison, most lithium-ion batteries typically last around **5,000 cycles** and have an energy density ranging from **250 to 300 wh/kg**.
Enhanced Performance for Electric Vehicles
The initial application of Donut Lab’s solid state battery will be in the TS Pro electric motorcycles produced by Verge Motorcycles. This integration will increase the driving range significantly, from **217 miles** with a conventional battery pack to an impressive **370 miles**. This enhancement is crucial for consumers seeking longer journeys without frequent recharging.
Beyond performance metrics, the solid state battery exhibits a notable safety advantage over conventional lithium-ion counterparts. Its construction eliminates flammable liquid electrolytes and metallic dendrites, which can lead to dangerous thermal runaway reactions. Furthermore, the battery maintains up to **99% of its capacity** in extreme temperatures as low as **-22 degrees Fahrenheit**, making it a reliable choice for vehicles operating in varied climates.
The launch of this battery represents a pivotal moment in the shift towards sustainable electric transportation. Marko Lehtimäki, CEO of Donut Lab, emphasized the readiness of their solid state technology, stating, “The future of solid state batteries has been a moving target, but our battery is ready to go, today.” This declaration comes as many companies still grapple with the timeline for bringing similar technologies to market.
A Competitive Landscape
Donut Lab is not alone in its pursuit of advanced battery technologies. Companies such as Huawei are reportedly developing their own high-capacity EV batteries, with claims that their technology could enable vehicles to travel over **1,800 miles** on a five-minute charge. However, such developments are expected to take several years before reaching production.
The introduction of solid state batteries could reshape the EV market, as they are designed to be fully discharged repeatedly without significant degradation. This durability could enhance the overall lifecycle of electric vehicles, making them more appealing to consumers concerned about battery longevity.
In conclusion, Donut Lab’s unveiling of the solid state EV battery at CES 2026 marks a significant milestone in battery technology. With its combination of high energy density, rapid charging, and enhanced safety, this innovation could play a crucial role in the future of electric mobility. As Lehtimäki asserts, “The future is now, today, not later,” reflecting the urgency and excitement surrounding this technological advancement.
