Patrick James Purcell, Resilient Advocate for Mental Health, Dies at 69

Patrick James Purcell, known as Pat, passed away on December 20, 2025, due to complications from lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He was 69 years old. Born in Washington, D.C., on August 29, 1956, Pat moved to Orlando, Florida, at the age of two and spent his formative years in Maitland.

He attended local schools, including Dommerich Elementary, Maitland Junior High, and Winter Park High, where he excelled in sports and was known for his wit and kindness. Pat’s life took a challenging turn during his sophomore year when he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, a neurobiological disorder that would profoundly affect him for decades.

Despite his diagnosis, Pat’s journey was marked by resilience. For many years, he faced significant challenges in managing his illness, spending much of his time in hospitals and struggling to respond to traditional treatments. His situation led his family, particularly his parents, to advocate for mental health awareness and support. They became involved with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and, in 1985, founded the local chapter, now known as NAMI Greater Orlando.

Medical Breakthrough and New Beginnings

A turning point came when the Purcells attended a NAMI national conference, where they learned about a new medication called Clozaril. They successfully persuaded the board of Pat’s hospital to allow him to participate in clinical trials for the drug. Within days of starting Clozaril, hospital staff reported significant improvements in his condition. This breakthrough marked the beginning of a new chapter in Pat’s life.

After his release from the hospital, Pat transitioned to a group home before moving into his own apartment. He regained a sense of independence, even obtaining a driver’s license. Pat formed a close bond with his father, Bill, and together they served as ushers at St. Mary Magdalene Church for many years. Their relationship flourished as they shared numerous adventures, including international travel and golf outings.

Pat’s generous spirit was evident in his everyday actions. He never passed a person in need without offering assistance, and he made it a point to remember special occasions for his family, often sending cards with scratch-off lottery tickets to celebrate birthdays and holidays.

Legacy of Advocacy and Family Support

In his later years, as physical ailments began to take their toll, Pat became a vital source of support for his parents. His dedication to family and his unwavering kindness left an indelible mark on those around him. He passed away with his family by his side, leaving behind a legacy of hope, advocacy, and compassion.

Pat was preceded in death by his father, William Osborne Purcell. He is survived by his mother, Ann Purcell; his three sisters, Page (Timothy Morris), Sara (John Backer), and Samantha (Christina Garrett Purcell); as well as his niece, Hannah Wooten (Justin Eason), and several special cousins across the United States.

Baldwin Brothers Funeral & Cremation Society is handling the arrangements. A private remembrance will be held to honor Pat’s life and contributions. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages the planting of a living memorial as a tribute to his enduring spirit and commitment to mental health advocacy.
