Uggs Make a Bold Comeback on the Runway at Copenhagen Fashion Week
The iconic Ugg boot made a striking return to the runway during the recent Copenhagen Fashion Week, showcasing its evolution in the fashion landscape. Once a staple for Australian surfers, Uggs have transitioned from a 2000s trend to a symbol of comfort and nostalgia. This season, the brand highlighted its adaptability with new styles, notably the Zora, a ballet flat lined with shearling, which offers a surprising blend of warmth and style.
Danish designer Anne Sofie Madsen collaborated with Ugg for her Fall/Winter 2026 collection, solidifying the brand’s place in contemporary fashion. Madsen emphasized the comfort of the boots, stating, “It’s a very comfortable shoe and it gives a nice contrast to a more tailored, feminine look.” The collection featured a mix of flowing gowns and tailored pieces paired with Ugg boots that were creatively modified—folded over, spiked, and spray-painted—transforming the models into figures ready for adventure.
The approach to Uggs this season marks a significant shift. Rather than attempting to alter the classic designs, the focus is on celebrating their original form. The classic short and Ultra platform boots remain popular choices, resonating with both fashion enthusiasts and everyday wearers. The recent snowfall in Copenhagen has prompted attendees at the shows to don various Ugg styles, further highlighting their practicality in cold weather.
While Uggs have appeared on runways in previous seasons, such as at Sacai A/W 2025 and Y/Project A/W 2018, the current season feels distinct. The emphasis on the brand’s heritage aligns with a growing consumer trend towards comfort and nostalgia. Madsen articulated this sentiment, reflecting on the challenges of creating something new in a rapidly changing world. She mentioned, “There was a future I once believed, that I was promised as a kid… With this collection, we are working with some old ghosts that we want to get rid of.”
The resurgence of Uggs extends beyond the runway. Observations of women in everyday settings reveal a renewed appreciation for the boots, often paired with long wool coats and cozy wraps. As people’s lifestyles shift, the desire for comfort becomes increasingly paramount. The current economic climate, where thrifting and reselling have become popular shopping methods, adds an extra layer of appeal to these nostalgic favorites.
Wearing Uggs today is more than a fashion statement; it reflects a broader cultural shift. While the past may have seen the boots paired with flashy velour tracksuits, the modern style embraces a more understated look, often complemented by cashmere sweaters and light-wash jeans. In an era where dependable comfort is harder to find, Uggs provide a reliable option that resonates with consumers seeking both style and warmth at accessible price points, often around a few hundred dollars.
As the fashion world continues to evolve, Uggs stand as a testament to the power of reinvention and the enduring appeal of comfort in fashion. The brand’s presence at Copenhagen Fashion Week not only highlights its adaptability but also underscores a collective yearning for familiarity in tumultuous times.
