Back Mountain Libraries Host Engaging Events and Community Drives
The Back Mountain Library and its associated branches are set to host a variety of engaging community events and initiatives throughout January 2026. These programs aim to promote literacy, wellness, and community connection, catering to individuals of all ages.
Upcoming Events at Local Libraries
The Hoyt Library, located at 284 Wyoming Ave., Kingston, will feature a series of virtual discussions with renowned authors. On January 13, cultural writer and bestselling author David Brooks will discuss his book, “How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply,” at 2 p.m. Following this, on January 20, journalist and author Julia Hotz will engage with audiences about her work, “The Connection Cure: The Prescriptive Power of Movement, Nature, Art, Service, and Belonging.” Finally, on January 28, author Liz Moore will share insights from her thrilling novel “The Gods of The Woods” at 7 p.m.. Interested participants can register for these virtual events or view past discussions at the Hoyt Library website.
In addition to author discussions, the libraries are conducting a Wellness Corner care drive to support students in need. The initiative seeks donations of essential hygiene products, including shampoo, body wash, toothpaste, and feminine hygiene items. All donations must be new and factory sealed, and can be dropped off during library hours.
Ongoing Programs and Community Engagement
The Un-Bound Book Club, which fosters casual conversation among readers, meets on the third Thursday of each month. No specific book is assigned, making it a relaxed environment for teens and adults to share their thoughts. To register, individuals can contact the library’s Information Services at 570-287-2013, ext. 230.
For younger patrons, Makerspace Mondays offer hands-on learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This program, designed for children aged 7 to 15, takes place every Monday from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. and encourages creativity and problem-solving. Parents are welcome to attend, and registration is encouraged due to limited space.
In addition, free math tutoring sessions are available for students in grades 6 to 12 every Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m.. Led by Fanhui Kong, a mathematics professor at Wilkes University, these sessions provide personalized support to help students improve their skills.
The libraries are also supporting the community through Alice’s Closet, which collects gently used winter clothing and accessories. Donations can be made during library hours.
Additional activities include Free Crochet Time on Thursdays, LEGO Build Fun for Kids on Thursday evenings, and a journaling and meditation session on the third Monday of each month. These programs are designed to engage community members in creative and social activities.
Library patrons are encouraged to participate in these enriching programs and initiatives that not only foster learning but also promote a sense of community. Those interested in more information or wishing to register for any programs can contact their local library directly.
For continued updates and announcements, community members are invited to send library news to [email protected].
