The winter sports season kicked off with the crowning of state champions, as Mount Greylock excelled at the MIAA Nordic skiing championship held at Prospect Mountain in Vermont. The school achieved a remarkable feat by winning both the girls’ and boys’ team competitions. In the girls’ individual race, Brookline junior Leigh Niedeck claimed victory, completing the course in 22 minutes, 51.6 seconds. Niedeck’s performance marked a significant achievement for Brookline, as she became the school’s second consecutive individual champion, following Hannah Petersen, who won the title last year.

Niedeck finished a notable 90 seconds ahead of her teammate, Rachael Strock, who placed second with a time of 24:19.5. As a team, Brookline secured second place, trailing Mount Greylock with a score of 79-33.

In other highlights from the day, several athletes reached personal milestones in their respective sports. Emma Plante, a senior at Joseph Case, surpassed the 1,000 career points mark, scoring 28 points alongside 12 rebounds, 8 blocks, and 6 steals during a narrow 43-34 victory over Bristol-Plymouth. Plante’s milestone was achieved with a hook shot in the lane, making her the fourth Cardinal in the program’s history to reach this achievement.

Similarly, Ryan McDonald, a senior at Walpole, became the thirteenth player in the school’s history to score 1,000 points during an 80-72 loss to Needham.

In wrestling, Gloucester senior captain Zachary Hashley celebrated his 100th career win, contributing to the team’s 56-24 triumph over Salem.

The basketball courts also saw exceptional performances. In a standout display, Mystic Valley senior tri-captain Mitchel Damas scored an astonishing 50 points with 18 rebounds during a 91-60 win against Notre Dame (Tyngsborough). This effort broke the school’s single-game scoring record previously held at 48 points. Coach Tony Ferullo praised Damas’s old-school style of play, stating, “We just fed him and he delivered. It all came from inside the paint or from foul shooting.”

In girls’ hockey, Maddie Wheeler led Framingham to a 7-3 victory over Ashland/Medway, securing a spot in the Division 1 tournament, representing a remarkable turnaround from last season’s single win.

Middleborough senior wrestler Iain Lindvall also reached a milestone, recording his 100th career victory during a quad meet at Brockton.

Sandwich girls’ basketball clinched the Cape & Islands Atlantic Division title with a convincing 54-22 win over Martha’s Vineyard, remaining undefeated in league play with a record of 15-2 overall.

Other significant achievements included Elyse Sharp and Sophie Holmes leading Falmouth Academy to victory in the Cape & Islands Lighthouse division girls’ basketball crown, and Westwood claiming the Tri-Valley Large boys’ basketball title after defeating Dedham 59-38.

Bridgewater-Raynham celebrated another championship by winning the inaugural Pioneer Athletic Conference girls’ basketball title with a 46-25 win over Barnstable. Senior Camden Strandberg also announced his commitment to continue playing football at the University of New England, after finishing his high school career with impressive statistics including 2,781 passing yards.

In college athletics, standout performances were recognized across various sports. Lily Schmalz, a sophomore at Navy and Needham graduate, earned the title of Patriot League women’s lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week for her crucial role in a victory against No. 10 Virginia.

This week’s scores and statistics reflect the competitive spirit and dedication of high school athletes across the region, with many setting personal records and contributing to their teams’ successes. Fans are encouraged to follow local scoreboards for updates on their favorite teams and athletes as the winter season progresses.
