Documentary Explores Vital Connections for Veterans Post-Afghanistan
A new documentary titled American Sons highlights the enduring struggles of veterans from the U.S. War in Afghanistan, which lasted nearly 20 years and officially concluded over four years ago. The film, airing on PBS, focuses on the story of JV Villarreal, a Marine from San Antonio, and his family’s journey after his tragic death in 2010.
The film, produced by Laura Varela and reported by Andrew Gonzales, delves into the emotional landscape faced by veterans and their families as they navigate life after deployment. The impact of war echoes long after the combat ends, particularly as suicide rates among service members continue to rise.
In a recent interview, Varela explained how the film centers around Villarreal, who documented his experiences through photos and videos at the request of his mother, Yolanda Villarreal. Before smartphones and social media, JV captured moments of his deployment in Afghanistan, which became invaluable to his family after his passing. The footage includes not only his experiences but also insights from his fellow Marines, presenting a comprehensive view of the bond they forged.
Andrew Gonzales elaborated on the significance of the title American Sons, noting that it reflects the dual narrative of loss and connection. Yolanda lost her son but gained new relationships with JV’s Marine brothers, who maintain close ties with the family. This brotherhood provides a support system for those grappling with grief and trauma from their service.
The film emphasizes the necessity of reconnecting with fellow veterans as a path to healing. Varela stated, “What we have found is that reconnection is very much a path to healing for them because they have suffered a lot of loss.” This sentiment resonates as the film illustrates the challenges Marines face when transitioning to civilian life, highlighting the ongoing need for community and support.
Gonzales noted the alarming rise in veteran suicides and expressed hope that proper support could prevent further tragedies. He pointed out that many effective resources for veterans come from peer-led organizations. “If we ask for our leaders to be able to take action, I think we’re still waiting on that to happen,” he remarked.
The documentary aims to raise awareness about the importance of mental health care for veterans, emphasizing that their sacrifices do not end upon returning home. Varela implored the public and policymakers to consider the ramifications of sending troops into prolonged conflicts and to prioritize their care after service.
As part of its outreach, the film will travel across the country in an impact campaign, screening in veteran-centric communities and partnering with organizations to connect veterans with essential services. This initiative aligns with the film’s mission to foster connections and encourage veterans to reach out for support.
The PBS airing of American Sons marks a significant step in its journey, but it is only the beginning. The filmmakers hope to inspire conversations around the experiences of Latino veterans and the broader implications of military service.
For those interested in supporting the conversation and outreach efforts, donations can be made to further this impactful work, ensuring that the stories of veterans like JV Villarreal continue to resonate and promote healing within their communities.
