SLCC Launches Programs to Support First-Generation College Students
Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) has launched a comprehensive pipeline aimed at empowering first-generation and low-income students to succeed in higher education. Through donor-supported initiatives, the college is working to eliminate barriers that often hinder access to college for these students.
The program begins with the high school PACE program, which serves as an introduction to college-level coursework and resources. After completing PACE, students transition into the Summer Bridge program, designed to prepare them for the academic rigor of college life. Finally, they enter the Bruin Scholar program at SLCC, which provides ongoing guidance and support throughout their college journey.
Erin Stirling, Director of Student Success Programs at SLCC, emphasized the importance of this structured approach. “Each stage is crafted to provide the necessary resources and encouragement for students, helping them navigate the complexities of college preparation and completion,” Stirling stated.
One success story comes from Karla, a former participant in the PACE program at West High School. After completing the program, Karla became a Bruin Scholar at SLCC and is now pursuing her education at the University of Utah. “These programs gave me the tools and confidence I needed to succeed in college,” she shared.
The initiative has gained traction thanks to the support of generous donors, making it possible for SLCC to offer these vital programs. By addressing the unique challenges faced by low-income and first-generation students, SLCC is helping them achieve their educational goals and secure brighter futures.
The college’s commitment to enhancing educational access aligns with broader national efforts to increase diversity and inclusion in higher education. With the support of community partners and stakeholders, SLCC aims to create a more equitable educational landscape for all students.
As SLCC continues to expand its programs, the impact on students’ lives is becoming increasingly evident. The pipeline not only equips students with academic skills but also fosters a sense of belonging and community, essential for long-term success in higher education.
In summary, SLCC’s innovative approach is making significant strides in supporting first-generation and low-income students. By providing structured pathways and essential resources, the college is helping to dismantle barriers and promote success in higher education for those who need it most.
