New AI Enhancements Revolutionize Military Drone Operations
The Florida-based company, Safe Pro, has introduced advanced artificial intelligence algorithms to its innovative Safe Pro Object Threat Detection (SPOTD) technology, enabling military drones to navigate and operate effectively in environments where Global Positioning System (GPS) signals are unavailable. This new capability will be showcased at the upcoming U.S. Army 2026 Concept Focused Warfighter Experiment technology demonstration set for Fort Hood, Texas.
The SPOTD technology serves as a rapid battlefield image analysis platform that identifies and maps potential explosive threats, including landmines and ambush drones, through video feeds captured by drones. The recent enhancements allow SPOTD to function optimally in GPS-denied areas, an advancement that came after feedback from real-world exercises conducted in Ukraine.
According to Dan Erdberg, Chairman of Safe Pro Group Inc., the new algorithms provide significant operational advantages. “These enhancements bring our customers indispensable tools for acquiring actionable intelligence in the harshest electronic warfare-contested environments,” he stated. Erdberg emphasized that the SPOTD technology will continue to redefine the role of AI on the modern battlefield, building upon user-driven feedback and evolving military tactics.
The technology’s foundation lies in Safe Pro’s extensive real-world datasets, comprising over 2.2 million drone images and more than 41,400 threats identified across 11,400 hectares. Whether deployed on the edge for real-time operations or utilizing cloud services from Amazon Web Services, SPOTD enhances situational awareness for ground personnel engaged in military or humanitarian missions.
The SPOTD solution integrates capabilities for operating in both GPS and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-denied environments. It includes threat and terrain mapping functionalities that support unmanned ground vehicles in route planning. Additionally, it features a Rapid Mapping Only Mode, which is designed for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance missions that do not require AI-powered threat detection.
Safe Pro also claims that its proprietary geospatial AI algorithms can reduce processing times by up to 10 times, making the technology not only efficient but also crucial for timely decision-making in critical situations. This development underscores the increasing importance of advanced technology in modern military operations, where situational awareness can be a decisive factor in mission success.
As military operations continue to evolve, innovations like Safe Pro’s SPOTD are set to play a pivotal role in enhancing operational effectiveness and ensuring the safety of personnel in challenging environments.
