Los Angeles Metro Purple Line Extension Opens May 8, Enhancing Connectivity

The first phase of the Metro D (Purple) Line subway extension, connecting Koreatown to Beverly Hills, will officially open on May 8, 2024, as announced by the Los Angeles Metro on February 26, 2024. This new segment will introduce three additional stations: Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega, greatly enhancing public transit options for residents and visitors alike.

The extension is a significant milestone for Los Angeles, as the D Line currently terminates at the Wilshire/Western Station in Koreatown. Once operational, travelers will be able to journey from downtown Los Angeles to Beverly Hills in approximately 21 minutes. According to Fernando Dutra, chair of the LA Metro Board and member of the Whittier City Council, this development marks a pivotal moment in the city’s transportation landscape. “This moment signals a new era of mobility for Los Angeles,” Dutra stated during the LA Metro governing board meeting. “It is what Angelenos deserve, and it is about time.”

The subway extension, which runs entirely underground along Wilshire Boulevard, has been in development for over 11 years and faced various delays due to protracted testing processes. The completion of this first phase will not only enhance access to Beverly Hills but will also bring the Metro system closer to connecting with the westside, including the Olympic Village at UCLA, set to host athletes during the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Future Phases and Economic Impact

The overall project aims to extend the D Line approximately 9.1 miles from Wilshire/Western to Westwood, with future phases already in the planning stages. The second phase is tentatively scheduled for a spring 2027 opening, adding stations in Beverly Hills and Century City. Following that, the third phase is expected to open in fall 2027, with stations proposed at UCLA and the Veterans Administration hospital.

The total cost for the D Line extension project is estimated to approach $10 billion. Stephanie Wiggins, CEO of LA Metro, emphasized the cultural significance of the extension. “Angelenos and visitors alike will love the extended service from downtown Los Angeles to Beverly Hills, delivering greater access to the iconic and culturally diverse communities, institutions, and destinations that define the deep history along Wilshire Boulevard,” she said.

The first phase will enhance connectivity to notable landmarks including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the La Brea Tar Pits, and the Petersen Automotive Museum. The addition of beautiful artwork in the stations is intended to enrich the travel experience, turning commutes into a journey of discovery through mid-Wilshire.

Engineering Challenges and Innovations

The construction of the D Line extension has posed significant engineering challenges. Metro contractors utilized advanced tunnel boring machines capable of excavating between 40 to 60 feet per day. This innovative approach enabled them to navigate complex geological conditions, including tar sands and abandoned oil wells, particularly under Beverly Hills High School.

“This project is one of the most complex engineering feats that Metro has undertaken,” noted Lindsey Horvath, Third District LA County Supervisor and LA Metro board member.

As the May 8 opening date approaches, anticipation is building among residents and local businesses. The D Line extension promises to reshape transit patterns in Los Angeles, offering a modern, efficient alternative to navigating the city’s often congested roadways. The project not only represents a substantial investment in infrastructure but also aims to create a lasting legacy for future generations of Angelenos.
