SpaceX Crew-12 Astronauts Dock with ISS on Valentine’s Day
SpaceX’s Crew-12 mission successfully docked with the International Space Station (ISS) on February 14, 2024, at approximately 3:15 p.m. EST (2015 GMT). This marked the end of a 36-hour journey through orbit, during which the crew prepared for their arrival at the space station.
Live coverage of the docking was available on Space.com, starting at 1:15 p.m. EST (1815 GMT), with a stream that continued for two hours post-docking to highlight further mission milestones. Following the docking procedure, the astronauts will change out of their spacesuits and prepare to offload cargo before opening the hatch between the Dragon capsule and the ISS’s Harmony module around 5 p.m. EST (2200 GMT). NASA announced that a welcome ceremony aboard the station would take place shortly after the hatch opens.
Mission Details and Crew Composition
The Crew-12 mission launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida early on February 13, 2024, aboard the Crew Dragon capsule named “Freedom.” The mission’s crew consists of four astronauts: Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway from NASA, Sophie Adenot from the European Space Agency, and Andrey Fedyaev representing Russia’s space agency Roscosmos. Hathaway and Adenot are making their first trip to space, while Meir and Fedyaev are returning for their second missions.
Fedyaev joined the crew as a late addition in December 2023, replacing Oleg Artemyev, who was removed due to a violation of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
Crew-12 astronauts are set to remain aboard the ISS until October 2024, extending their stay beyond the typical six-month crew rotation. They will join three other crew members currently on the ISS: NASA’s Chris Williams and cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev. The ISS had been operating with a reduced crew since January 15, 2024, following an early departure of the Crew-11 mission due to a medical issue with one of its astronauts, which remains undisclosed.
Historical Context and Significance
The current crew configuration underscores the evolving nature of space missions. The ISS has maintained a continuous human presence since November 2000, with a nominal crew size of seven since 2020. Prior to this, the baseline crew size was three, which was expanded to six in 2009.
This docking marks a significant event not only for SpaceX but also for international collaboration in space exploration. The Crew-12 mission illustrates the ongoing partnership between NASA and international space agencies, as well as the vital role commercial spaceflight plays in advancing human presence in low Earth orbit.
As the Crew-12 astronauts settle into their new environment aboard the ISS, they will engage in various scientific experiments and research projects, contributing to our understanding of life in space and paving the way for future missions to the Moon and Mars.
