Esteemed Philanthropist and Business Leader Stephen F. Hinchliffe Dies at 92
Stephen F. Hinchliffe, Jr., a prominent business executive and philanthropist from Los Angeles, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025, at the age of 92, surrounded by his family. His lifelong dedication to corporate leadership and community service has left an indelible mark on Southern California’s cultural and nonprofit landscape.
Career Highlights and Community Impact
Born on July 18, 1933, to Stephen F. Hinchliffe, Sr. and Katherine Gruettner Hinchliffe, Steve grew up in Hermosa Beach. He demonstrated early entrepreneurial skills, selling products door-to-door and establishing a competitive spirit that would define his later achievements. By age 19, he had claimed four national titles as the United States Junior National Badminton Champion, showcasing his drive and talent.
Steve earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Occidental College in 1955, where he met his future wife, Ann Hoffmann. Following their marriage, they attended Harvard Business School, where he graduated with distinction in 1957. After serving as a lieutenant in the United States Army, he began his professional journey at McKinsey & Company.
In 1964, he took a significant leap by co-founding The Leisure Group, Inc., later known as BHH Management, Inc., focusing on consumer products. This partnership with Merle H. Banta lasted over 50 years, concluding with his retirement at the age of 85. While his corporate endeavors were notable, Steve was particularly passionate about his contributions to the nonprofit sector.
He held leadership roles on several boards, including those of the Los Angeles Metropolitan YMCA, Center Theatre Group, and the Board of Trustees of Occidental College. His steady guidance and philanthropy significantly influenced these organizations, helping them navigate challenges and achieve growth.
A Life of Passion and Family Commitment
Outside of his professional commitments, Steve cherished time spent on Catalina Island and in Mammoth. He pursued various interests with enthusiasm, including studying World War II history, practicing magic, and restoring machinery. His passion for magic even earned him membership in the prestigious Magic Castle.
Family was at the heart of Steve’s life. He loved gathering with his children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter, Stevie Rae Link. His family included his wife of nearly 70 years, Ann, his daughter Lisa Hinchliffe Link (married to Dave), and his sons Stephen F. Hinchliffe III (married to Terry) and John Hinchliffe. He also leaves behind four grandchildren: Andy Link (married to Sarah), Ryan Link, Mackenzie Hinchliffe, and Katelyn Hinchliffe), as well as his brothers Bruce (married to Sandra) and Doug (married to Robin).
A private celebration of Steve’s life is planned for January 10, 2026. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be made to the Los Angeles Metropolitan YMCA or other charities that were dear to him. Steve Hinchliffe’s legacy of integrity, mentorship, and community service will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
