Arizona’s Health Partnership Generates $59 Billion Economic Impact
The partnership between the University of Arizona and Banner Health has driven an impressive economic impact of $59 billion in its first decade, significantly enhancing health care delivery and medical education across Arizona. Formed ten years ago, this collaboration has positioned itself as a vital response to the state’s growing health care needs, merging the strengths of Arizona’s leading public research university and its largest nonprofit health system.
This alliance aims to meet the increasing demand for medical professionals and advanced care through robust educational initiatives. Annually, nearly 1,000 medical students are trained, alongside more than 1,300 residents and fellows across over 80 programs in six hospitals. This educational framework supports one of the largest graduate medical education programs in the United States, addressing the critical shortage of physicians and nurses in the region.
As the partnership has flourished, Banner Health has emerged as the largest private employer in Arizona, supporting 33,000 direct and indirect jobs. Simultaneously, the University of Arizona solidified its role as the largest employer in Southern Arizona, employing over 14,000 faculty and staff. This economic backbone is crucial for the region, fostering job creation and contributing to local economic stability.
Over the past decade, the collaboration has spurred significant investments, with Banner committing more than $2 billion toward capital projects. These investments have supported over 12,000 construction jobs and resulted in the development of advanced health care facilities in Tucson and Phoenix. Additionally, the University of Arizona has contributed more than $400 million for educational and training spaces, enhancing the resources available to students and health professionals.
The partnership’s economic achievements are underscored by its contributions to research and innovation. With over 600 joint clinical trials, the collaboration has accelerated the delivery of new medical treatments and technologies to Arizona patients. This includes advancements in cancer services, a top-rated heart transplant program, and breakthroughs in neuroscience.
While the economic figures are substantial, the personal stories behind them highlight the true impact of this partnership. From the state’s first fetal surgery performed on newborn twins to successful immunotherapy treatments for cancer patients, individual lives are transformed as a result of this initiative.
This model of academic medicine is not confined to classrooms and hospitals; it extends throughout Arizona, addressing the evolving health care demands of its residents. The partnership, originally a vision supported by the Arizona Board of Regents, has proven to be an effective model for health care delivery and economic development.
Looking ahead, the next decade promises further advancements in patient care and innovative research. The collaboration aims to leverage cutting-edge technologies to enhance patient experiences and outcomes. Continued focus on education and training will ensure a steady pipeline of qualified health care providers ready to meet the challenges of the future.
The shared commitment of the University of Arizona and Banner Health to serve and improve the health of Arizonans reflects a dedication to harnessing scientific discovery for the benefit of the community. As they continue to build on their successful foundation, the potential for health care innovation in Arizona remains boundless.
