St. Joseph School District Audit Reveals No Major Issues
The St. Joseph School District in Missouri has completed its audit for the 2024–2025 fiscal year, revealing no significant deficiencies or material weaknesses. The audit was conducted by Jon Cummings from KPM CPAs, with findings presented during a recent Board of Education meeting. Robert Hedgecorth, the district’s Assistant Superintendent of Business and Operations, emphasized the positive outcome of the audit.
One of the key recommendations from the audit focused on ensuring timely reimbursement filings for Title funds and closely monitoring operating fund balances. Hedgecorth explained the district’s goal is to return to the board policy target of 20% for its operating funds, noting that the auditor suggested a target of 25%. He indicated that maintaining a balance within the range of 22% to 23% would be beneficial for the district’s financial health.
As the district prepares for the next budget cycle, Hedgecorth highlighted the importance of fiscal responsibility. The St. Joseph School District aims to reduce its budget by $4 million annually over the next two years, leading to a total of $8 million in expenditure cuts. This strategy is designed to help the district recover financially, especially as it navigates the challenges of building consolidations and operational decisions.
Hedgecorth pointed out that discussions regarding budget allocations will not be easy, particularly as some reductions are linked to the ongoing building consolidation plan. He noted that staff attrition, including retirements and resignations, will also contribute to lowering expenses, especially with fewer facilities requiring staffing.
“People understand that we need to reach our financial goals, and I believe they will approach this with the right mindset,” Hedgecorth stated. He took on the responsibility of steering the district through its financial challenges and ensuring the necessary fiscal discipline as it moves forward.
The St. Joseph School District’s commitment to transparency and accountability, as demonstrated by the audit results and the outlined budgetary targets, reflects its proactive approach to financial management. With careful planning and collaboration among district leaders, the aim is to foster a sustainable financial future for the school community.
