Explore the Role of Black Patriots at Valley Forge This February
The Historical Society of Montgomery County is set to honor Black History Month with a program titled “Patriots of African Descent during the Valley Forge Encampment of 1777-1778.” This event, scheduled for February 18, 2024, aims to shed light on the significant contributions of individuals of African descent during the pivotal winter encampment at Valley Forge.
From late 1777 to summer 1778, many African Americans played crucial roles in the Continental Army and local communities. The program will delve into the experiences of Black soldiers who enlisted, highlighting their resilience amid the harsh conditions of the encampment. Justin Clement, an expert on the Revolutionary War era, will lead the discussion, sharing insights from his extensive research.
Discovering Unsung Heroes
Clement’s presentation will cover the stories of the hundreds of Black soldiers who faced immense challenges during their service, as well as the Black ironworkers at Mount Joy Forge. These workers were vital to the war effort, yet their contributions remain largely overlooked in historical narratives.
The program also aims to highlight the impact of the Revolutionary War on African American civilians. Many faced disruptions as armies moved through their communities, forever changing their lives. Attendees will learn about the broader legacies of Black Patriots and Loyalists, exploring their journeys to places like Nova Scotia, the Bahamas, Sierra Leone, and even Canton, China.
Event Details and Registration
The event will take place at the Historical Society of Montgomery County, located at 1654 DeKalb Street, Norristown, beginning at 18:30. The program will include a lively discussion accompanied by light refreshments. Seating is limited, and pre-registration is recommended to ensure participation.
Attendance is free, though a suggested donation of $5 would be appreciated to support future programming. Limited off-street parking will be available for attendees.
