Washington Memorial Chapel Honors Veterans with Wreaths Ceremony

The Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, will host the Third Annual Wreaths Across America Ceremony on December 13, 2023, at 11 a.m. This event aims to honor veterans by laying 850 wreaths at its historic cemetery. The ceremony is conducted in partnership with the Society of Descendants of Washington’s Army at Valley Forge and the Veterans Commission.

The mission of Wreaths Across America is to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach future generations about the value of freedom. This year, the organization expects over two million volunteers and supporters to gather at more than 5,200 participating locations across all 50 states, as well as at sea and abroad.

Community Tribute to Veterans

The annual ceremony at the Washington Memorial Chapel serves as a poignant reminder of the soldiers who lost their lives during the 1777–1778 Valley Forge Encampment and those veterans interred in the Chapel’s churchyard. As each wreath is placed, the name of a veteran is announced, ensuring their service and sacrifice are publicly acknowledged.

This year, Father Tim Steeves will deliver the keynote address, further emphasizing the event’s significance. The community is invited to participate in this heartfelt tribute, which not only honors local veterans but also strengthens communal ties through shared remembrance.

Volunteer Opportunities Available

Organizers are seeking volunteers for several tasks related to the ceremony. Opportunities include setting up wreath stands on December 12, assisting with the wreath-laying on December 13, and participating in cleanup efforts on January 17.
