County Funding Supports HUGS Initiative to Combat Child Hunger
Efforts to alleviate child hunger in St. Johns County received a significant boost when local officials allocated funding to the nonprofit organization HUGS Across the County. This initiative aims to restock food pantries in schools, ensuring that students and their families have access to essential food items.
According to recent statistics, nearly 10,000 people in St. Johns County, including approximately 3,900 children, rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for their daily meals. With uncertainty surrounding these benefits, community support has become increasingly vital.
Every first Friday of the month, volunteers from HUGS visit schools, including Sebastian Middle School, to replenish pantry shelves. Dr. Linda Hilton, a U.S. Navy veteran and dedicated volunteer, leads her team in identifying and delivering the most needed supplies. “No kid should go hungry,” she emphasized, highlighting the mission of HUGS.
The recent county funding will enable HUGS to acquire additional supplies, as the organization anticipates a rise in demand for assistance. Commissioner Sarah Arnold, who spearheaded the funding initiative, stated that should SNAP benefits not be restored in November, they would revisit funding discussions in December.
As volunteers arrived at Sebastian Middle School, they were met with expressions of gratitude from staff and students alike. The nonprofit also maintains a comprehensive inventory of food pantries throughout the county, aiding families in locating available resources.
This initiative not only addresses immediate food insecurity but also fosters a sense of community resilience. With organizations like HUGS stepping up, St. Johns County is taking proactive measures to ensure that no child goes hungry.
As the support from local government continues, HUGS remains committed to its mission of providing essential food supplies to families in need, making a tangible difference in the lives of children across the county.
