Trump Plans to Designate Antifa as Terrorist Organization
President Donald Trump is poised to designate the anti-fascism movement known as Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization, with the potential for an executive order to be signed as early as Monday, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. This declaration represents a significant step in Trump’s administration’s broader strategy to confront left-leaning political groups, following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
At a press briefing, Leavitt confirmed, “Antifa is going to be designated a domestic terrorist organization.” She added that the president intends to sign an executive order “very soon,” signaling urgency in the administration’s plans.
The announcement follows Trump’s commitment made last week regarding the designation of Antifa. Leavitt criticized Democratic lawmakers for their perceived alignment with what she described as a radical fringe of the left. “Many Democrats in elective office have now been totally captured by a radical fringe who want to dehumanize every person they disagree with,” she stated, referencing those who opposed a resolution honoring Kirk.
The effectiveness and implications of such an order remain uncertain. The term “Antifa,” which stands for anti-fascist, encompasses a diverse range of individuals whose political beliefs often lean far left but do not align strictly with the Democratic Party. Unlike organized far-right groups such as the Proud Boys or Oath Keepers, Antifa lacks a centralized leadership, complicating any potential crackdown on its activities or funding.
Leavitt indicated that the executive order would be part of a series of moves to combat leftist groups, emphasizing the administration’s focus on investigating funding sources for Antifa and other similar groups. “We will be most importantly looking at who is funding Antifa and who is funding these other violent left-wing groups,” she noted.
Trump’s previous attempts to label Antifa as a terrorist organization during his first term faced constitutional challenges. Legal analysts have pointed out that although it is illegal to provide support to foreign terrorist organizations, there is no equivalent law for domestic groups. The lack of a defined hierarchy within Antifa further complicates efforts to address the movement legally.
In a social media post last week, Trump expressed his intent, stating, “I am designating ANTIFA, A SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER, AS A MAJOR TERRORIST ORGANIZATION.” He called for thorough investigations into those funding Antifa, aligning with his administration’s ongoing efforts to scrutinize left-wing activism.
Leavitt cited specific instances of violence purportedly linked to Antifa, including bullets recovered from the investigation into Kirk’s shooting, which were reportedly engraved with anti-fascist messages. She reiterated the administration’s commitment to addressing what they consider violent actions stemming from this group.
The term “antifa” has historical roots in anti-fascist movements that emerged during World War II, opposing fascist regimes and white supremacist groups throughout Europe. The recent announcement regarding its designation as a terrorist organization raises concerns about potential overreach in the administration’s authority and the implications for dissenting voices within the political landscape.
In related comments, Trump suggested that participants from the activist group Code Pink, who protested during his recent visit to a restaurant in Washington, DC, should face legal repercussions. These statements reflect the ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and various activist groups.
As the administration prepares to take these steps, the broader implications for political discourse and activism in the United States remain to be seen, with many observers closely monitoring the developments surrounding the planned designation of Antifa.
