Publix Recalls Ice Cream Due to Undeclared Egg Allergen Risk
Publix Super Markets has initiated a voluntary recall of its Publix Rich & Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream due to the presence of an undeclared egg allergen, which poses a serious health risk for individuals with egg allergies. The recall was announced in a notice by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on October 14, 2023, following a labeling error that has the potential to cause severe allergic reactions.
The issue arose when half-gallon containers labeled as Vanilla Ice Cream were found to contain Publix Rich & Creamy French Vanilla Ice Cream, with the incorrect French Vanilla lids being used for packaging. This mislabeling means customers who are allergic to eggs may inadvertently purchase a product that could trigger life-threatening reactions.
Health Risks and Consumer Impact
Each year, millions of Americans experience food allergies, with the FDA identifying nine major allergens, including eggs, milk, fish, and peanuts. For those with egg allergies, consuming the mislabeled product could lead to serious health consequences. Clear and accurate labeling is crucial for consumers to make safe dietary choices, highlighting the importance of this recall.
The recalled ice cream has a sell-by date of June 19, 2026, and is marked with the UPC code 41415 03043. It was distributed to Publix locations in several states, including Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida, although stores in Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Tampa, and Sarasota are excluded from this recall. Stores in Virginia and North Carolina were not affected.
To date, Publix has reported no confirmed illnesses related to the recalled ice cream. However, the company is taking proactive measures to ensure consumer safety.
Company Response and Next Steps
In a statement, Maria Brous, Director of Communications for Publix, emphasized the company’s commitment to food safety. She stated, “As part of our commitment to food safety, potentially impacted product has been removed from all store shelves. To date, there have been no reported cases of illness.”
Customers who have purchased the affected ice cream are advised to check their freezers and return the product to their local Publix store for a full refund, regardless of whether the item has been opened or consumed. The company will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
For further inquiries, customers can contact Publix’s customer care department toll-free at 1-800-242-1227 or visit publix.com for more information.
