Missouri Hosts Free “Unwind Like a Caveman” Event on August 11

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is set to host a free event titled “Unwind Like a Caveman” on August 11, 2023, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Corby Grove Park in St. Joseph. This event will also mark the grand opening of the newly constructed shelter house at Corby Pond, which is managed by the St. Joseph Parks and Recreation Department.
The event aims to explore how early humans alleviated stress and embraced the health benefits of nature, practices that remain relevant today. Attendees will have the chance to participate in various activities designed to promote relaxation and mental well-being.
Event Highlights and Activities
The dedication of the shelter house is a significant milestone, made possible through an Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Grant from MDC. After the official dedication, MDC staff will facilitate a discussion focused on the One Health initiative. This initiative emphasizes the interconnectedness of human health, environmental health, and animal health.
Representatives from the Glore Psychiatric Museum will share insights into the historical approaches to mental health care. Following this informative session, participants can engage in nature-based stress relief activities.
Local Boy Scouts will provide lessons on starting a fire, while MDC will offer fishing poles for public use at the pond. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear, although regular fishing permit rules will apply. For more information regarding fishing permits, individuals can visit mdc.mo.gov/fishing or contact the Northwest Regional Office at 816-271-3100.
Location and Additional Information
The event takes place at Corby Grove Park, located at 2202 Corby Parkway in St. Joseph. No prior registration is required, making it accessible to all members of the community.
