Community Mourns Thomas L. Friend, Beloved Family Man and Veteran
Thomas L. Friend, an esteemed member of the Wakeman community, passed away on February 12, 2026, at the age of 85. He died peacefully at home after a prolonged battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and devotion to family and friends.
Born on November 1, 1940, in Norwalk, Ohio, Thomas was the son of the late William and Mary (Steffanni) Friend. He graduated from Townsend-Wakeman High School in 1958, where he showcased his athletic talents in football, basketball, and track. Following high school, he embarked on a career in trucking, initially working for Ohio Body in New London and later for Wolfe Trucking.
In October 1963, Thomas was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. While he served stateside, he married his beloved wife, Brenda Gerber, during a leave from boot camp. After two years of service, he returned to his passion for driving trucks, working for several companies including Dauch Concrete and Baker Trucking. Eventually, he became an owner-operator, leasing to Kaplan Trucking and then Matlack Hauling, before retiring in 1999 after a distinguished career in the industry.
Passions Beyond Work
Thomas was not only a dedicated truck driver but also an enthusiastic participant in various local activities. He enjoyed competing in tractor pulls with his Massey-Ferguson riding mower and was a member of the Wakeman Tractor Pulling group. While records of his wins and losses remain unclear, the joy he found in these competitions was undeniable.
In addition to tractor pulls, Thomas had a passion for snowmobiling, becoming an active member of the Wakeman Sno-Ballers. He frequently took trips to Gaylord, Michigan, with Brenda and their family to ride the trails. This love for snowmobiling extended to his children and grandchildren, who continue to cherish these memories.
After retiring, Thomas embraced travel, exploring the country in his motor home. He developed a keen interest in vintage scooters, particularly Cushman scooters, which he collected over the years. He actively participated in vintage motor scooter swap meets, especially enjoying events in Portland, Indiana. His membership in the Cushman Club of America and the Vintage Motor Bike Club reflected his dedication to this hobby.
A Legacy of Family and Community
Family was at the core of Thomas’s life. He was a devoted supporter of his grandchildren, attending their sporting events across various disciplines including volleyball, cross country, football, basketball, baseball, and track. His enthusiasm for their achievements was evident, often arriving before the team bus to cheer them on.
Thomas was also a Master Mason, holding 45 years of membership at Wakeman’s Gibson Lodge #301. His commitment to community service was further demonstrated through his involvement with the Wakeman Congregational Church and as a charter member of the Wakeman Eagles.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Brenda; his daughter Carol Puder (Jeff); his son Tom Friend (Lea); his sister Mary Lou Mack; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, George Friend, and sister, Norma Jackson.
A visitation will be held on February 21, 2026, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Wakeman Congregational Church, located at 14 Abbott Street, Wakeman. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm, presided over by Janet Ross. Thomas will be laid to rest in Wakeman Cemetery.
In memory of Thomas, donations may be made to a charity of choice or to the Wakeman Congregational Church Memorial Fund. Arrangements are being handled by Toft Funeral Home, Wakeman Chapel. Friends and family may share condolences online at toftfuneralhome.com.
