Remembering Beverly Knudson: A Life of Love and Service
Beverly Knudson, a beloved mother and active community member, passed away on December 11, 2023, at the age of 89, following a brief battle with pneumonia while recuperating from partial hip replacement surgery. Despite her struggle with dementia in recent years, Beverly remained a vibrant and loving presence for her family and friends until her final moments.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Beverly was raised in a nurturing environment by her father, a skilled machinist, and her mother, who was dedicated to homemaking. In 1938, when Beverly was just two years old, her family relocated to Pomona, California, seeking better opportunities. The onset of World War II prompted a return to Cleveland in 1940, allowing them to stay close to relatives as her father navigated his role in the war. His expertise ultimately kept him engaged in building bombers rather than serving overseas.
Beverly’s childhood was marked by family activities, including helping her mother with household chores, attending movies, and dancing. At 11 years old, the family moved back to California, settling in North Hollywood. Beverly attended Van Nuys High School, where she blossomed socially, catching the attention of classmates, including future actor Robert Redford.
After two years at junior college, Beverly gained acceptance into the dental hygiene program at the University of Southern California (USC), earning her Bachelor of Science degree in 1959. She soon began working full-time at a dental office near Universal Studios, where she quickly made a name for herself. Early in her career, she served as President of The San Fernando Valley Dental Hygienists’ Society, showcasing her leadership skills.
Beverly met her future husband, Harlan Knudson, at a church mixer in North Hollywood in 1960. The couple married the same year and eventually settled in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, where they raised three energetic sons: Mark, Brian, and Eric. Beverly was deeply involved in the community, serving as President of the PTA at Silver Spur Elementary School and as a long-time board member of the Palos Verdes Art Associates.
Her interests extended beyond family and work; Beverly was an avid tennis and Scrabble player, a church choral singer, and a performer in musical theater with The Prime Time Players at The Norris Theatre. Her passion for local charities, including the support group Bravo!, demonstrated her commitment to giving back.
Beverly’s zest for life was evident in her love of gatherings, often accompanied by a glass of wine. Her culinary skills were highlighted when she won an apple pie contest, showcasing her talent in the kitchen. Throughout her life, she maintained a sensitive side, often moved to tears by heartfelt church sermons.
Even after retiring in 2006, Beverly continued to work part-time as a dental hygienist. In her 70s, she pursued a writing class and produced a semi-autobiographical novel titled The Linden Tree Legacy, which reflects on her resilient Slovenian ancestors. She was also in the process of publishing an autobiography about her career, titled Down In The Mouth, which is expected to be released soon.
Beverly’s lively spirit and infectious laughter left a lasting impression on those around her. She is survived by her sons, Mark, Brian, and Eric, daughter-in-law Joelle, and her three grandchildren, Makenna, Tyler, and Breegan.
A memorial service and celebratory lunch reception will take place on March 7, 2024, from 11:00 to 14:00 at The Neighborhood Church, located at 415 Paseo Del Mar, Palos Verdes Estates. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to The Neighborhood Church, where both Harlan and Beverly were active members.
A private ceremony will follow at Green Hills Mortuary, where Beverly’s and Harlan’s ashes will be interred. Beverly’s name will be added to a plaque in their honor on the church’s seaside memorial wall, a lasting tribute to a life filled with love and service.
