Collaboration Takes Center Stage at SDPA 2025 Fall Conference
At the Society of Dermatology Physician Associates (SDPA) 2025 Fall Conference held in San Antonio, Texas, healthcare professionals gathered to discuss advancements in dermatology, featuring insights from session presenter Cynthia Trickett, MPAS, PA-C. Trickett, who is affiliated with North Dallas Dermatology Associates, shared her perspectives on the evolving role of physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) in dermatology, along with updates on treatment protocols and the industry’s collaboration with healthcare providers.
During the conference, Trickett highlighted a notable shift in the industry’s approach toward PAs and NPs. “I have been so lucky to spend a lot of this conference engaging with industry,” she remarked. “They want to know what our thoughts are, how we learn, and what media we learn best in.” This interaction signals a growing recognition of the vital contributions of PAs and NPs to patient care in dermatology. Trickett emphasized that these professionals are poised to outnumber dermatologists, underlining the importance of their voices in shaping treatment strategies.
Advancements in Psoriatic Disease Treatments
Trickett also addressed recent data regarding psoriatic disease treatments. She noted that advancements are leading to improved patient outcomes, including higher clearance rates in skin conditions and faster joint improvements for those with psoriatic arthritis. “New molecules are coming to the market, oral molecules are coming to the market, and better topicals are coming to the market,” she stated, expressing optimism about the current landscape of treatment options.
When discussing topical treatments, Trickett pointed out a significant change in the perception of topical steroids. “There’s been a shift in dogma in using topical steroids,” she explained, emphasizing that long-term use has been associated with various side effects. The introduction of advanced topical treatments offers safer alternatives that can be used in sensitive areas, which she believes is revolutionary for patient care.
In addressing topical steroid withdrawal (TSW), Trickett acknowledged its existence, particularly in patients with large body surface areas. She urged for a balanced understanding among healthcare providers: “We need to have a healthy respect; we need to be aware that it can happen.” Trickett pointed out that patients often receive steroids from multiple sources, which complicates the monitoring of their usage.
The Role of Topical JAK Inhibitors
In her discussion, Trickett also highlighted the role of topical JAK inhibitors for conditions like atopic dermatitis. She referred to these treatments as revolutionary, particularly as the medical community moves towards more responsible use of steroids. “It’s high time that we learn about topical steroid stewardship,” she stated, advocating for alternative treatments that minimize long-term side effects.
As the SDPA conference progressed, Trickett’s insights and experiences resonated with many attendees, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and education in the dermatology field. Her commitment to mentoring new practitioners, through initiatives like the Emerging Scholars program, reflects her dedication to advancing the practice and ensuring that future healthcare providers are well-equipped to address the complexities of dermatological conditions.
In conclusion, the SDPA 2025 Fall Conference served as a platform for critical discussions on the future of dermatology, showcasing the growing recognition of PAs and NPs and the innovative advancements in treatment options. With professionals like Cynthia Trickett leading the charge, the dermatology field appears to be heading towards a more inclusive and collaborative future.
