University of Utah Launches Innovative Master’s in Fine Arts Teaching
The University of Utah has introduced a unique opportunity for educators and artists seeking to enhance their teaching skills through its Master of Arts in Teaching – Fine Arts (MAT-FA) program. This innovative hybrid program combines online coursework with an initial immersive experience, allowing participants to balance their educational pursuits with ongoing professional commitments.
The MAT-FA is tailored for working educators and community artists, aiming to enrich educational experiences by integrating the arts into learning. According to Kelby McIntyre-Martinez, who discussed the program on the local show Fresh Living, the program brings together all five academic units in the College of Fine Arts—visual art, theatre, music, dance, and film/media arts. This collaboration provides students with access to distinguished arts education faculty and a comprehensive curriculum.
Participants begin their journey with a 10-day summer intensive on campus, where they engage in creative and research activities. Following this, they transition to asynchronous online coursework while continuing to teach in their respective schools or communities. This structure not only facilitates immediate application of new skills but also demonstrates the transformative effects of arts-integrated learning on student outcomes.
The program has proven successful, achieving a remarkable 100% retention rate for three consecutive years. Educators from across the United States can pursue their advanced degree without having to pause their careers, relocate, or leave their classrooms. The collaborative environment fosters strong connections among students, enhancing both personal and professional development.
Applications for the Summer 2026 cohort are currently open, with a deadline set for March 15, 2026. McIntyre-Martinez encourages interested educators to visit the program’s website for more information and to consider applying to this transformative educational opportunity.
By integrating the arts into teaching, the University of Utah’s MAT-FA program not only enhances personal growth for educators but also aims to positively impact learners of all ages within schools and communities. The initiative represents a significant step forward in the field of arts education, highlighting the essential role of creativity in effective teaching practices.
