Shedeur Sanders to Start for Browns as NFL Season Intensifies
In a significant shift for the Cleveland Browns, rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders will make his first NFL start this Sunday in Las Vegas. The decision comes as fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel continues to recover from a concussion sustained during last week’s game. Sanders stepped in during the second half of the Browns’ 23-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, where he struggled, completing only 4 of 16 passes with one interception.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed on Wednesday that Gabriel remains in concussion protocol, paving the way for Sanders to become the 42nd quarterback to start for the franchise since 1999. The team is looking for an improvement as they aim to turn around their season.
Penix Out for the Season, Cousins Takes the Helm
In a parallel development, the Atlanta Falcons announced that quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will undergo season-ending surgery for a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The injury occurred during a recent 30-27 overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers, pushing the Falcons’ losing streak to five games. Following the announcement, veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins has been named the starter for the remainder of the season, as the team prepares for their upcoming clash against the New Orleans Saints.

Virginia Tech is the first Power Four program to hire a coach this cycle, securing Franklin’s services shortly after his dismissal from Penn State.
Franklin emphasized the importance of alignment among the coaching staff, athletic director Whit Babcock, and university president Tim Sands as part of his vision for the program’s future.

World Cup Expands with New Qualifiers
On the international football stage, the expansion of the World Cup to include 48 teams has led to the qualification of smaller nations such as Curaçao and Cape Verde for the tournament next year. This expansion, part of FIFA’s controversial plans announced in 2017, has generated both excitement and skepticism regarding the impact on the tournament’s quality and competitiveness. The World Cup will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in June and July 2026.
