Ornithologist Gerardo Marrón Explores Baja’s Avian Wonders

In late October, ornithologist Gerardo Marrón and a team of scientists embarked on an expedition in the Sierra de las Cacachilas, located southeast of La Paz, Mexico. Their goal? To study the area’s rich biodiversity, including the elusive elf owl, the world’s smallest owl species, measuring just about 5 inches tall. As night fell, Marrón’s unique bird calls echoed through the mountains, creating an atmosphere of anticipation among the group.

Marrón, a research coordinator for Pronatura Noroeste, has dedicated nearly two decades to studying the diverse bird populations of Baja California Sur, which boasts over 400 species. His work extends beyond mere research; he actively engages the local community, recently organizing a Christmas bird count in Las Cacachilas. His commitment to science education aims to inspire younger generations and bridge the gap between children and the natural world.

A Passion for Nature and Science

Marrón’s connection to nature began in his childhood, influenced by parents deeply rooted in the natural environment. His father hailed from a ranch, while his mother grew up in a fishing community. “My interest came naturally,” he reflected. As a child, he would explore his backyard, fascinated by ants and their habitats, even organizing ant fights at school to learn more about their behaviors.

His formal journey into ornithology began at the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur, where he was invited to join a bird lab as a marine biology student. A pivotal field trip to Guerrero Negro ignited his passion for birds, revealing breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife. “There were thousands of shorebirds and hundreds of ducks,” he recalled. “It was the first time I saw someone identifying birds in the field, and I was hooked.”

Unique Discoveries and Community Engagement

During the expedition in the Sierra de las Cacachilas, Marrón’s team successfully spotted an elf owl, which brought a sense of joy and excitement to the group. “Every time I see an owl, it’s just fantastic,” he shared, highlighting his deep appreciation for these creatures. His extensive fieldwork has allowed him to observe many unique species, including the marsh sandpiper and the sharp-tailed sandpiper, the latter being only the second recorded in Mexico.

Marrón’s work emphasizes not only the scientific aspects of ornithology but also the importance of connecting with nature. He describes the process of calling to birds as akin to a dance, a method he uses primarily to confirm rare species or when teaching newcomers. “I prefer not to interfere with nature,” he explained, noting that his approach varies depending on the situation.

Bringing science to children and young adults is a key focus for Marrón and Pronatura Noroeste. He believes in empowering youth, particularly in communities outside of La Paz, to understand their potential in scientific discovery. He recounted an inspiring interaction with middle school students, where they learned about a newly discovered spider species in their region, encouraging them to explore their own backyards for undiscovered wonders.

Marrón’s passion for exploration continues to drive his research and community initiatives. He aims to fill gaps in knowledge about Baja California Sur, a region often overshadowed by its famous beaches and marine life. “There are many places in Baja California Sur that have not been touched,” he stated. “All my life has been about exploring.” With his dedication to birds and education, Marrón is not only advancing scientific knowledge but also nurturing a love for nature in the next generation.
