KerryAnn O’Meara Set to Lead as New Provost of Fordham University
KerryAnn O’Meara will take on the role of provost and senior vice president of Student Affairs at Fordham University, starting in July 2026. She succeeds Dennis C. Jacobs, who has been the university’s Chief Academic Officer since 2019. Jacobs confirmed that he was not involved in the selection process for O’Meara, emphasizing that the decision was made by University President Tania Tetlow, a standard practice in academic institutions.
O’Meara holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Loyola University Maryland, graduating in 1993. She later earned a master’s degree in higher education administration from Ohio State University and obtained her Ph.D. in education policy from the University of Maryland in 2000. Her work at the University of Maryland was notably supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, including a significant $3.2 million grant aimed at promoting women in STEM fields.
O’Meara’s Vision for Fordham
Following 15 years at the University of Maryland, O’Meara briefly served as vice president for Academic Affairs, provost, and dean of Columbia University’s Teachers College before her upcoming appointment at Fordham. During her time at Teachers College, she focused on enhancing financial aid reform and centralizing student advising, aligning with the institution’s strategic vision.
Although O’Meara graduated from a Jesuit university and is currently a member of its Board of Trustees, her position at Fordham marks her first experience in a religiously affiliated institution. In a statement to The Ram, O’Meara expressed her intent to connect with students directly. “I want to take the Ram Van between campuses with some of them,” she said. “Learn about their Ramily traditions, where the best cup of coffee is, and what places are best for studying.”
O’Meara plans to integrate the principle of cura personalis—care for the whole person—into her leadership at Fordham. She believes the university excels in providing opportunities for students to understand how they can make a difference in the world.
Support from University Leadership
In a statement regarding O’Meara’s appointment, President Tetlow highlighted her comprehensive understanding of the provost role. “She understands the provostship as a role of accompaniment, stewardship, and collaboration,” Tetlow noted, particularly relevant in a time when higher education faces numerous challenges.
Tetlow also underscored O’Meara’s extensive experience at a large public research university, which she believes will benefit Fordham in its ambitions to enhance its STEM program. “Her experience supporting faculty across the sciences and professional fields will serve Fordham well as we advance our STEM ambitions,” Tetlow remarked.
Jacobs acknowledged the groundwork laid during his tenure that O’Meara will continue. “We’ve worked hard on advancing the sciences and building and broadening programming,” he stated, mentioning a new honors program for science students at the Rose Hill campus that will commence in the upcoming fall.
As O’Meara prepares for her new role, Jacobs is set to retire and relocate to Chicago, where his family resides. He expressed confidence in O’Meara’s leadership and looks forward to the discussions leading up to her official start, ensuring she has a successful transition into her role as provost.
O’Meara’s leadership at Fordham is expected to bring fresh perspectives and strategic initiatives to enhance the university’s academic offerings and student experience.
