Doctoral Researcher Shahin Alam Tackles Water Quality Challenges
Shahin Alam, a doctoral student at Florida State University (FSU), is making significant strides in civil engineering with his research focused on hydraulic elements in the St. Johns River Basin. His dissertation aims to address critical water quality challenges faced by many communities in Florida, particularly concerning nutrient dynamics and contaminants.
Under the mentorship of Gang Chen, a professor in civil and environmental engineering, Alam’s research specifically examines the flow of nitrogen and phosphorus in local water systems. He also investigates potential contaminants such as microplastics and PFAS—an acronym for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances known for their environmental persistence. Alam’s work is crucial as these elements pose increasing risks to water quality across the state.
Leadership and Community Engagement
In addition to his research, Alam plays a vital role in fostering community and professional development at FSU. As president of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Graduate Student Association (CEEGSA), he has organized numerous events aimed at enhancing academic achievement and student involvement. These include the annual CEEGSA Professional Conference, networking sessions, and student orientation programs.
Alam also serves as a representative for his college in the Congress of Graduate Students (COGS), where he advocates for graduate student funding and equitable resource distribution. His leadership activities have strengthened his skills in collaboration and organizational management, benefiting both his peers and the broader FSU community.
Innovative Research Initiatives
Alam’s academic journey at FSU has been marked by notable achievements. He led a comprehensive research project investigating how nutrients move and transform within the St. Johns River Basin. This project provided new insights into how urbanization, agricultural practices, and tidal processes affect nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics in coastal waters.
One of the standout features of Alam’s dissertation is its integration of advanced technologies. By combining machine learning and deep learning with watershed modeling, he is among a select group of students applying artificial intelligence to environmental science within the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. This innovative approach positions his research at the forefront of addressing emerging contaminants like PFAS and microplastics.
Alam’s work not only contributes to academic knowledge but also has a tangible impact on Florida’s water quality. By collaborating with local and state agencies, including the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, he is helping to develop a data-driven understanding of contamination patterns in the St. Johns River Basin. This research is essential for protecting Florida’s water resources and ecosystems.
As Alam continues his doctoral studies, he remains committed to improving water quality in his community and beyond. His dedication to civil engineering and active involvement in student leadership exemplify how academic research can intersect with community needs, driving both professional growth and environmental stewardship.
