Rancho San Justo Middle School in Hollister, California, recently recognized its students for exhibiting positive behavior, respect, and integrity during its annual Positive Behavioral Interventions & Support (PBIS) Luncheon held on December 10, 2023. This event is part of a broader initiative within the Hollister School District, which emphasizes the importance of fostering a supportive environment for students.

The PBIS model, as defined by the Center on PBIS, is an evidence-based framework designed to support students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs. Principal Deborah Armstrong explained that teachers at Rancho San Justo select students not solely based on academic performance, but rather on their demonstration of positive growth in behavior and integrity.

The festive luncheon featured tables adorned with holiday decorations and music, providing a warm atmosphere for the students and teachers. A taco lunch prepared by the Student Nutrition Department added to the celebration. Approximately 45 students were honored, chosen by around 30 teachers who participated in the event.

Celebrating Growth and Positive Interactions

During the luncheon, Principal Armstrong commended the students for their significant improvements in behavior. She highlighted that many of them had previously spent time in her office but had made “great strides” in their conduct. As students enjoyed their meal, Armstrong expressed her pride, saying, “I always say I’m a proud principal and I’m especially proud of you.”

The event also saw participation from Board President Jan Grist, Trustee Cathy Toste, Superintendent Erika Sanchez, and Director of Student Nutrition Patty Cattoor, who helped serve the students and faculty. Grist described the attendees as “model students” and emphasized the positive interactions that such events foster between students and teachers. “Whenever we can celebrate students in such a giving way, it is the best thing we can do to encourage them that school can be fun,” she remarked.

Building Community Through School Culture

The idea for the PBIS Luncheon was introduced to Rancho San Justo by Assistant Principal Samantha Rivas two years ago. Rivas recalled that the initial theme revolved around “Cookies and Cocoa,” and she mentioned her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “It’s my favorite event of the year.”

The luncheon serves as a vital component of Rancho San Justo’s commitment to creating a positive school culture. By recognizing students who exemplify the principles of PBIS, the school not only rewards individual achievement but also reinforces the values of community and mutual respect among students and staff. With ongoing support from educators and administrators, Rancho San Justo continues to cultivate an environment where students can thrive both academically and socially.
