Crowley ISD and Tarleton State Launch Innovative Teacher Pathway
A new dual credit program at Tarleton State University Fort Worth is setting the stage for aspiring educators from Crowley Independent School District (ISD). This initiative, which began in the fall, aims to address the pressing need for teachers in local schools amid challenges in educator retention across the state.
During a recent class, students engaged in a discussion led by Javier Ordoñez, head of the education and training department at Crowley ISD. The students debated whom to select for volunteer opportunities, illustrating their growing understanding of classroom dynamics. “Ultimately, guys, it’s your class,” Ordoñez emphasized, highlighting the importance of their insights in teaching.
The education pathway program allows high school students to earn college credits while preparing for careers in education. Ordoñez noted that while many students aim to become teachers, the skills they acquire could also benefit fields such as social work and psychology. He expressed hope that these young educators would return to Crowley ISD, where over 60% of students are considered at risk of dropping out. “These types of communities are in great need of educators who are passionate and committed to what they do,” he stated.
Building the Future of Education
The collaboration between Crowley ISD and Tarleton State University Fort Worth is entering its second year. Rachael Capua, dean of the university’s Fort Worth campus, noted the joint recognition of the need for a pathway for future educators. “How special will it be that some of these students will actually come back to teach within their own neighborhoods?” she asked, underscoring the program’s community-focused goals.
Na’Kiya May, a junior at North Crowley High School, is one of the program’s enthusiastic participants. Inspired by her mother, who is also a teacher, May has found her confidence growing in Ordoñez’s class. “When I first got to this class, I didn’t really like talking in front of the class,” she recalled. “But Mr. Ordoñez helped me make a better version of myself.” May is eager to become a kindergarten teacher upon graduating, motivated by her experiences in the program and her time as a teacher aide at Crowley Montessori Academy.
Another student, Tameah Benton, aims for a career in healthcare but has enjoyed her time in the education pathway. “I really always had cool teachers,” Benton shared, reflecting on how impactful educators have inspired her. “They always made me feel like I belonged in the class,” she noted, highlighting the importance of a supportive educational environment.
A Shared Vision for Local Education
Ordoñez expressed pride in the progress his students have made. “As the semester has gone on, you’ve seen them get comfortable and grow on their strengths,” he said. This transformation, he explained, has been particularly rewarding for both him and the students.
The partnership between Crowley ISD and Tarleton State is not just about creating educators but fostering a community of passionate individuals committed to making a difference in local schools. With plans to expand the program in the future, both institutions are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of teachers who will serve their communities.
As the program evolves, it holds the promise of not only enhancing educational opportunities for students but also rejuvenating the teaching profession within the Crowley area. The success of these students may very well shape the future of education in their communities, ensuring that dedicated educators are available to inspire the next generation.
