Coconino County Seeks Candidates for School Board Positions
Coconino County is actively seeking candidates to fill open seats on the governing boards of the Flagstaff Unified School District and the Maine Consolidated School District for the upcoming election cycle. Superintendent Cheryl Mango-Paget announced that a total of four seats will be available, each carrying a four-year term. Those interested in shaping educational policy have until the general election on November 3, 2026, to declare their candidacy. Successful candidates will begin their terms on January 1, 2027.
To facilitate interested individuals, Superintendent Mango-Paget will host informational sessions to discuss the responsibilities and requirements of school board members. The session for the Flagstaff board is scheduled for January 21, 2026, at the district’s main office, while the Maine board session will take place on January 20, 2026, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the school’s front office. These sessions aim to provide clarity on the filing process and to allow potential candidates to ask questions directly to the superintendent.
Participating in these school boards offers residents a meaningful opportunity to influence educational policy, oversee district operations, and contribute to student achievement. Individuals contemplating a bid for the board can access necessary information, including prerequisites and election packets, by visiting the Coconino County Superintendent of Schools website. They can also reach out directly at 928-679-8070 or via email at [email protected] or [email protected].
Eligibility criteria to run for the school board are clearly defined. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and registered voters in Arizona. They must have lived within the respective school district for at least one year prior to the election and cannot be employed by the district or be related to individuals who are. Additionally, serving alongside an immediate family member within the same residence in the past four years or on more than one School District Governing Board simultaneously is prohibited.
On election day, qualified voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots for new members who are prepared to serve and advocate for Flagstaff‘s educational community. This initiative reflects the county’s commitment to fostering local involvement in education and ensuring that community voices are represented in school governance.
