Trial Date Set for Luigi Mangione in CEO Murder Case

Luigi Mangione is poised to face a federal death penalty trial in connection with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett indicated on Friday that jury selection could begin as early as September 8, with the trial potentially commencing in December 2024, or January 2027 if the prosecution continues to pursue capital charges.

During a pretrial hearing, Judge Garnett considered a defense motion aimed at preventing prosecutors from seeking the death penalty. If the court decides to exclude capital punishment from the case, Mangione could stand trial in October 2024. The judge is expected to provide a written schedule after reviewing her calendar and consulting with the court’s jury coordinator.

In addition to the death penalty issue, the defense has requested the dismissal of certain charges against Mangione, including the firearm murder charge that underpins the possibility of capital punishment. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced last year that federal prosecutors would seek the death penalty, describing the murder as a “premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America.” Mangione’s legal team argues that Bondi’s public statements, including social media posts and televised appearances, indicate that her decision was politically motivated rather than based on legal merit. They contend that her remarks influenced the grand jury process leading to Mangione’s indictment.
