Clemson University Celebrates First Full-Length Student Film Premiere
On February 10, 2026, Clemson University hosted the premiere screening of its first full-length feature film, titled Student Film: The Movie. The event took place at the Brooks Center, attracting an audience that included faculty, alumni, and friends from across the country, showcasing the collaborative effort of students and industry professionals in creating this landmark production.
Celebration of Student Achievement
The premiere was a gala affair, complete with a red carpet, lights, cameras, and a catered reception. Notable attendees included Clemson’s new Provost, Cole Smith, the Mayor of Clemson, Robert Halfacre, the Chair of the SC House Ways and Means Committee, Bruce Bannister, and the South Carolina Film Commissioner, Matt Storm. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as audience members traveled from as far as Idaho to witness the event.
Dean Nicholas Vazsonyi emphasized the significance of the evening, describing it as a culmination of several remarkable initiatives that reflect the university’s commitment to advancing its film program. He credited a substantial grant from the South Carolina Film Commission as a key factor in making the film possible, highlighting the vision and energy of Sam Sokolow, the newly appointed Professor of Practice.
From Concept to Creation
In 2020, when Dean Vazsonyi assumed his role, Clemson had already established a popular World Cinema program focused on film history, theory, and criticism. However, students expressed a desire for hands-on experience in film production. As the world began to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, Vazsonyi learned of Sokolow, a Hollywood producer who had returned to South Carolina and was interested in teaching.
Sokolow’s larger-than-life personality and industry expertise quickly made a significant impact on the program. Within months, he transitioned from a part-time role to a full-time Professor of Practice and secured the grant that enabled the production of Student Film: The Movie.
The film project involved students in various capacities, from acting in lead roles to working in directing, filming, audio, wardrobe, and makeup. This comprehensive engagement provided students with an experiential learning opportunity unlike anything previously offered by the College, allowing them to collaborate closely with industry professionals.
As the film’s premiere marked a significant milestone for Clemson’s film program, Dean Vazsonyi conveyed excitement for the future. He noted that this is just the beginning of a journey to develop a first-class program that would be a source of pride for South Carolina.
“Stay tuned for the next episode in our journey,” he concluded, rallying support with the spirited phrase, “Let’s Go, Tigers!”
The success of this premiere not only showcases the talents of Clemson students but also highlights the university’s commitment to fostering creativity and innovation in the arts.
