The Niagara County Department of Health has confirmed two cases of rabies in raccoons, raising concerns about potential exposure in the community. The first case was reported on January 8, 2023, on Shawnee Road in the town of Cambria. This incident involved two dogs encountering a raccoon, and authorities noted that one human had possible secondary contact.

Just two days later, a second rabies case emerged on Wheeler Road in the town of Hartland, where three dogs came into contact with another raccoon. In this instance, three humans were identified as having possible secondary contact. Fortunately, health officials stated that no post-exposure treatment is currently necessary for any of the humans involved.

All pets that were exposed have received their rabies vaccinations and will be given boosters as a precautionary measure. The health department emphasized the importance of keeping pets up to date on vaccinations to prevent such incidents from escalating.

To mitigate the risk of rabies exposure, the Niagara County Department of Health has shared several recommendations with the public. These include avoiding the feeding, touching, or adopting of wild animals and strays, as well as ensuring that pets are regularly vaccinated against rabies.
