Renowned costume designer Ruth E. Carter recently received her fifth Oscar nomination, solidifying her status as a trailblazer in the film industry. With a record number of awards among Black women in Oscar history, Carter reflects on her journey, emphasizing that her aspirations were never about accolades but rather about her craft.

A Journey Rooted in Passion

Carter’s rise in the industry has not been without its challenges. She did not set out to be recognized as a Black costume designer; instead, her focus was always on becoming a great costume designer. “I didn’t set out to be a Black costume designer or anything like that. I set out to be a great costume designer, and I had such good support along the way,” she stated in a recent interview. This foundation of support has been crucial to her success.

Drawing a parallel between costume design and athletics, Carter likened her profession to that of a top-tier athlete, noting that both require immense commitment. “There’s a lot of training, a lot of preparation, a lot of study, a lot of research, a lot of sacrifice,” she explained. Yet, for Carter, the rewards of her work make the sacrifices worthwhile. “When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life,” she added.

Collaboration with Visionary Filmmakers

Carter has collaborated with some of the most innovative filmmakers in the industry, including Ryan Coogler, the director of the acclaimed Black Panther series. Her work on these films earned her two Oscars, transforming her into a household name. She reunites with Coogler for his upcoming horror film, which has already garnered Oscar nominations for 2025. “He’s a maverick. He is really a genius, and working with him and seeing his writing and hearing him talk about his passion, everything roots out of passion,” Carter remarked, highlighting the importance of collaboration in her creative process.

As she reflects on her journey, Carter expressed gratitude for her enduring career, stating, “I feel so lucky for my career longevity so far.” She also mentioned her intention to pass on wisdom to younger generations. “I would thank [my younger self], and I would say, ‘You listen to your voice,’” Carter advised. She encourages young people to trust their instincts and remain dedicated to their passions.

Carter plans to attend the 98th Academy Awards next month, where she will showcase one of her own designs, further cementing her influence in the fashion and film industries.
